Hi there,

Wondering if anyone can share their timeline for green card interview in Sydney? My husband got notice that his CR1 visa application had been expedited on March 13 but then we haven't heard anything since. I thought we would have received an email with the interview date by now.

Thanks!

Hi have you got interview letter?

Probably my last post here.

I received my Green Card in the mail today. So from arrival to USA to receiving it, took 11 weeks and 2 days.

Thank you to all who helped me along the way, and I hope I was able to contribute some good answers for fellow aussies.

good luck to all in your journey!!

Ugh, so annoyed. My husband was supposed to have his medical this morning with his interview on 20 April, so plenty of time for the consulate to receive the results. Well the doctor is sick today so it has been rescheduled until the day after his interview. I know it isn’t a big deal but I was really hoping everything would be done by his interview so we would get a decision right away. Just another delay in a long list of delays 🙁

So the question is - Does anyone have any idea whether it is possible (given Covid and all the complexity that comes with it), to travel to the USA for a short period and return to Australia - noting that we will then look to depart permanently some 4 - 6 months later.  Welcome any information concerning issues in travelling from/to Australia, as well as any challenges that we may face on the USA front (although I am led to believe that after receiving our Green Card we are permitted to depart the country temporarily).

All information welcome and appreciated.

You currently need to apply for an exemption to leave Australia, and one of the criteria is that you will be gone more than 3 months. When you arrive in the USA you need to give your address to the C&BP officers for the green card and social security card to be sent to (if different to your DS-260).  This could take several months, so I am not sure how that fits with your plans to "travel to the USA for a short period".

Flights leaving Australia are not overly expensive, but flights coming back are really expensive, so if current quarantine arrangements are still in place, the return journey could cost you anywhere well over $5,000 at the very minimum - usually a lot more.

Once you have entered the US on your temporary visa (the visa that the Consulate puts in your passport), you can leave the US for up to 6 months, but longer than that you will be questioned about your permanent resident status.  Absences of over a year means that you will lose that PR status.

Sorry to hear! The waits are just agonizing. Hopefully this delay is a very small one!

Once I secure my "Green Card" approval, I am looking to travel to the USA to collect it and make plans for our migration to the USA (from Australia).  We are thinking of doing this as part of a holiday/vacation, with a view to returning to Australia and arranging for shipping of our stuff and tying up loose ends prior to permanent departure from Australia.  We imagine that this will take around 4- 6 months.

You are in a grey area regarding an exemption to leave Australia. You meet the criteria to be granted an exemption because of your US immigrant visa .. but you must certify that you will not be returning in less than 3 months. The return trip to Aust will be expensive and not easy to book as you will be booking under the restricted incoming passenger numbers. Your flight could be cancelled at the last minute ... you could be off loaded at the last minute .. you could contract COVID 19 and get a positive PCR in preparation to travel .. just not a simple task any more.

Do I need to take a USA police check for my K1 visa interview?

Nope. https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/immigrate/the-immigrant-visa-process/step-5-collect-financial-evidence-and-other-supporting-documents/step-7-collect-civil-documents.html "Note: Present and former residents of the United States do NOT need to submit any U.S. police certificates."

I have another situation regarding police clearance.

I lived in South Africa for a few years after turning 16. I left the country in 2017 and never returned. I got a police clearance in 2019. South Africa is currently in lockdown and I'm unable to get a police clearance.

Can I use the one from 2019 since I have never returned to the country?

is this in Melbourne SonicHealth plus? if so, id recommend either rescheduling at a different clinic or conducting in Sydney. My approval is delayed due to a similar situation.
