In Lue of Passport

Hey all Canucks out there! I need your help clearing this one out

My passport expires this Jul so last month I sent all the documentation (along with my Canadian Citizenship Card- they needed that too) to Passport Canada. Well I just got off the phone with them and they are now processing applications received in March! I told the lady there was no emergency really I just wanted to get my passport befored mid Aug other wise it might be til Christmas that I would be able to get time off. She told me I could enter Canada with my Green Card.

Has anyone done this? It never occured to me that you could.. so please any info will be greatly appreciated!

Correct Canada recognizes the US Green card as ID for entry, and the US only needs it to return, on the ground, Passport is required for air travel to and from Canada. And after Jan 2008 the passport will be required for the land crossings too.

Once we're moved into the U.S. how do we apply for a new passport? Mine is good for another couple of years but I know they're going to go by fast and before long I'll be wanting to renew it.

Go to www.passportcanada.gc.ca and there you will find the form you need to fill out to get a new passport since for some reason they don't renew them. Good luck!

The renewal plan starts August 15th 2007 but it's only for Canadians living in Canada for the time being. Just wanted to let ya know

It was also just announced that the US won't enforce the passport for land and sea crossings until June 2008. I suspect that the date may get pushed back again since they still are not prepared for the logistics involved.

You can also travel with a NEXUS card instead of a passport, even after the "you-must-have-a-passport-to-come-into-the-US-day." I just found that out on the NEXUS application.

And who knows if the June 2008 will even stick and they don't trash that completely by then. I submitted for my Canadian passport in Jan of this year and I got it finally back about 4 months later. The ####### thing is I had to get someone who knows me in Canada to sign like a doctor etc. Well kind of hard since I haven't lived there for a decade at all. My parents ended up getting their friend who is a vetenarian to sign the photos for me.

Think I heard they may now allow US people to sign, as soon I won't ever be able to get a Canadian passport as I won't know anyone there anymore...

they do allow you to get someone from the US to sign... they have for awhile too...

Eligible guarantors

Your guarantor must:

1. Be a citizen of Canada or the United States and must be accessible to Passport Canada for verification.

2. Have known you personally for at least two years.

3. Be one of the following:

* Chiropractor

* Dentist

* Judge

* Lawyer

* Magistrate

* Medical doctor

* Notary public (notarial seal must appear on the application form)

* Pharmacist

* Police officer

* Signing officer of a bank or trust company, or of a financial institution that offers the full range of banking services (cash withdrawals, deposits and savings)

* Veterinarian

A relative may act as a guarantor for passport purposes provided he or she meets the specified requirements.

Declaration in lieu of guarantor

If you have not known an eligible guarantor for at least two years, complete form PPTC 132 "Statutory Declaration in Lieu of Guarantor" available from any Passport Canada service location or Canadian Government office in the U.S.

The "Statutory Declaration in Lieu of Guarantor" form must be sworn to or declared before, and signed by, a person authorized by law to administer an oath or a solemn declaration. If completed outside Canada, a qualified official includes a Canadian or British diplomatic or consular representative, or a qualified local official.

I ended up 1800- OH CANADA to get a number for the Immigration or something they gave me number for Border Services 204-983-3500 in case anyone is interested. It turns out I can enter Canada with my Green card and valid government issued ID (like a driver's lincense) Thank goodness, I'm really getting homesick!
