Hello everyone,

I apologize if this has been addressed already, but I couldn't find our specific circumstance. We received NOA1 on 2/10/2020. We did not think we would be approved so fast, we received notification of NVC stage 5/16/2020 and have already paid fees. However, I submitted my wives passport for ITIN number on March 2nd with our MFJ taxes. Per the normal timeline I would have had her passport back in time. However, the IRS has been closed since Mid-March. I called the IRS yesterday to get a status update and she said they did not even have it in their system as received yet. She said she believes they will resume work on June 1st. My question is, what should we do? Do we need to wait for her passport? Will anything bad happen if she goes and gets a new passport? I have read that getting a new passport doesn't hurt in the event that it is lost or expiring, but this is slightly different as the IRS has it.

Thanks in advance!

You are months away from an interview as you are not yet document qualified at NVC

YMMV

Passport is needed at the NVC as well. I’m in the same boat.

That assumes that you didn't make a copy of the ID page before sending off.  One should never send a document such as a passport without maintaining a copy in your files.  Makes it a lot easier to replace in case it is lost

YMMV
