What Happened to America’s Mayor?

Not long ago, Rudy Giuliani was traveling in a car across New York City with Jon Sale, his longtime friend, when some construction workers saw the former mayor and approached the vehicle. Giuliani lowered the window. “One of them,” Sale recalls, “said, ‘Mr. Mayor, I would like to shake your hand and thank you for what you did for New York. I wish you were still mayor.’ ”

This happens a lot to Rudy Giuliani, and it reflects what he once represented to most Americans: a man whose steady response to the attacks of September 11th, 2001, transcended partisan politics and transformed him into a national hero. Christened “America’s Mayor,” Giuliani for years was an immensely popular figure who appeared destined for a lucrative, decorated career at the spires of American business and government.

Two decades later, Giuliani is in free fall. The past few years on the national stage have left his reputation in tatters, marked in history for his role in the Ukraine extortion scandal that got a president impeached. He has seemed, at times, unstable and incoherent, contradicting both himself and the president in wild appearances on cable news, while spinning a web of conspiracy theories with Joe Biden at the center.

Strange, all the negative press about Giuliani started only a few years ago, despite the fact that the guy has likely been corrupt his entire political life.

Can't put my finger on what it was..

As one of the comments alludes to, many people became familiar with Giuliani based on his response to the events of 9/11. He did an exemplary job with that, but most of the rest of his carreer both prior to and post 9/11 was a different guy. Many casual observers just caught him at his best moment without seeing the worst.

Interestingly, it's the media's fault that 9/11 perception of Giuliani became popular, gave him a lifetime of money and worldwide fame. Notably absent in the piece is an ounce of self-reflection on the media's role, naturally, because they want Giuliani ground to pieces for the crime of helping Trump. I can feel the pain from the venom in this piece, they're mad because these media people define themselves in the scope of influence they have over others perceptions and choices, and the real discussion should be why their own political leverage is in freefall. But because they have no other options, they unintentionally do their own comedy going on about how Giuliani is in such bad shape because he's the butt of late night comedy jokes about a 9/11 image they helped elevate. 😂

I never thought that 9/11 made Giuliani a national hero.

What really worked for Giuliani was cleaning up the cesspool NYC had become.

Indeed. If I remember correctly it was because he cleaned up a lot of little stuff. The kind of stuff that is ruining SF

Not just SF.  Look at the rate of people fleeing CA and you'll see the problem is much larger than one city.
