Hey there,

I moved to the US last October and I'm currently waiting for my green card interview or employment document. I was just wondering if anyone has had any experience with getting a license here whilst having a UK drivers license. I've read some people just get them exchanged whereas others have to redo the whole drivers test with a written and road test. I know it's state specific so if anyone has any experience with Wisconsin or similar that'd be great!

Thanks!

Check your state DOT website to see if UK is a reciprocate country, if yo, you might get a transfer, if not, it’s back to learners

Wisconsin says—

Foreign motorists from France, Germany, Republic of Korea (South Korea), and Taiwan (Republic of China) who apply for a class D Regular Wisconsin driver license may be eligible to have the knowledge and skills tests waived under a reciprocal agreement for driver licensing with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

You will not be eligible for “an exchange”.

Here’s the documentation they require proving legal status to get a license

Yep. I'm in the same situation as a Brit in WI and there is no license exchange according to WI policy.

Have been swotting up in preparation for doing the testing when things start going back to normal, supposedly sometimes examiners can be a bit more lenient in cases like ours where we have a full foreign license that won't exchange/they can't waive the tests for, but I don't want to waste my time by not being prepared if that's not actually true!

Free resources from Wisconsin public libraries with very similar questions to the actual written test. The actual test is 65 questions; 50 rules of the road and law questions,  and 15 road signs.

My husband just took the written exam two weeks ago. He needed green card, mail from USCIS to prove address, and social security card (entire card with address). Hope that helps!
