Hi All,

I was in the same situation, to renew my driver’s license in Georgia State. I shown them NOA with my expired 2-year GC. At 1st they have trouble to understand that, but they discussed with other officers and agreed to issue the license. I got it renewed for one year.

What kills me is that it is usually a 5 year renewal and I was able to get it while being a student on F-1 visa. Go figure ;)))

LPRs have less rights ;)))

I've been in a similar situation where the staff and the manager of a particular DMV branch in NYC were ignorant, rude, and absolutely unwilling to use any kind of logic beyond the printed guidelines in front of them. So what did I do? I went to another DMV and found a reasonable person who helped me out. Don't waste your time with ignorant staff; the great thing about the US is that there is always someone who is willing to provide better service. Try every single RMV office in RI until you get that license :)

You have relieved my mind greatly about this! I was worried that next Spring when both my license and my green card expire I would be facing the situation of " a letter and an expired green card are not enough!". I was trying to figure out all sorts of ways to convince the local immigration office to give me the I-551 stamp since the DMV does recognize that. So, hopefully they will have seen enough of these NOA letters by then that it won't be a problem.

UPDATE:

My husband and I went to the Pawtucket RMV yesterday to see if we would have any luck. We were told straight away to go to "ENFORCEMENT". A very nice younger man helped us at the counter, and a crotchety older guy asked the stupid questions.

We explain the situation and our reason for denial in the Middletown branch.

The young guy says that he doesn't understand why they would have a problem and he apologizes. The old crotchty guy sitting at a desk 15 feet away starts asking questions about the visa, etc. He wouldn't let my husband speak and kept asking us for his I-20 (what the hell is that??) and why doesn't he have an I-20. I pipe up and try to explain about the lifting of conditions ect. After 10 minutes of explaining he asks, "Who are you anyway?" I say, "I'm his wife." The crotchety old man the tells the nice young guy, "Just approve it!" all grumpy. Haha. 15 minutes of him not understanding what he's talking about, all I needed to do was say that I was his wife.

How much do want to bet if I wasn't white and I spoke with an accent, it would have been a lot more difficult...

This is crazy how most of those workers don't know anything about these things. My driver's license is valid till 2012 (I'm surprised that they gave it to me for so many years ahead) and if we move during the removal of conditions process, then I'll try to do it online. North Carolina lets you just file for a renewal online without presenting any papers.

I don't doubt you're right about that.

An I-20 has something to do with student visas, I think. So the guy, surprise surprise, didn't know what he was talking about.

I think they need to come up with something better in terms of a system for processing immigrant DL's. The RMV workers don't know enough about the various immigration statuses to do their job correctly.

Actually I took InfoPass and went to local Atlanta immigration office to get I-551 stamp, they didn't issue me one. They said NOA letter and expired GC is enough.

There is so much inconsistency. The immigration officer told me we are entitled to have that stamp!

As i understood, they will issue I-551 stamp, if you loose your NOA letter or if you didnot get NOA before your 2 year GC expires. And again it depends on the officer you will face in the local office.

My hubby and I are relocating back to KY from OH, and this has been a concern on my mind. Now that I've read this thread, my fears are definitely worse. I just hope the KY DMV isn't as ignorant, and understand what the hell an extension letter means.

Good luck to the OP!!

I have had nothing but trouble with the NJ DMV since I moved to the US in 2000.

I came over on a J-1 and was told I didn't need/couldn't get a NJ license. Then I went to renew my car insurance and was told I no longer could drive without a NJ license.... Cue frantic trip to DMV, which turned into a 4 hour ordeal. I finally left with my license which was only valid for the length of time remaining on my visa (about 4 months). Even though I was in the middle of a H1B application....

Then I had to go back about 4 times in 2 years to renew my license. One time I showed up at 8.00AM to find the parking lot totally full. I had to park down the highway in an office parking lot and then walk along the shoulder to the DMV. I then waited on line outside in Feb temperatures for 2 hours. When I finally got inside the guy guarding the door told me that I should have been in line earlier and would never be seen that day. He said the people "like you" start waiting in line from 5AM onwards in order to get seen that day. At that point I almost started crying. I kept talking to him and sort of waved my paperwork at him, and then he suddenly said "oh go over to that window", I did and was processed within the hour. It's totally random.

Fortunately, they now have changed the rules so that aliens "like me" don't have to go to the Regional Service Center (which is hell on a stick), but can instead go to some of the larger offices as well.

But every time I go they tell me something different, or want something different from me. I can't wait to have an argument with them about the NOA's validity. I think my current ALIEN license expires in October.

Oh joy.

If anyone else has problems, I'd just try showing your paperwork to as many different people in each office as you can. And try other offices if possible. Sooner or later you find someone who is not totally disinterested or angry, and they'll help you out.

Good luck!
