Study: People Find Women Wearing Make‑up More Trustworthy

A new study found that women wearing make-up were perceived as more trustworthy, compared to women without make-up, by both men and women. Additionally, men were more likely than women to trust women wearing make-up with larger sums of money than women were.

Published in the Journal of Economic Psychology, the researchers attempted to understand the influence of make-up on a women’s trustworthiness through the trust game experiment. But, instead of using glamorous or intense make-up on the subjects, the researchers used cosmetics on the participants to hide blemishes and “imperfections,” and highlight the eyes and lips to “enhance (their) facial attractiveness.” The results showed that both men and women displayed more trust towards women wearing make-up. But, interestingly, the men were more likely to transfer relatively larger amounts of money, as compared to their female counterparts, to these women. This led the researchers to conclude that visual manipulation using cosmetics increased attractiveness, and in turn, perceptions of trustworthiness — the very foundation of the concept of beauty premium.

Yes, this could be a cross-post with the Beauty Thread, but I am less likely to hear from men over there (some notable exceptions excluded of course). I wear makeup pretty much every day, even now when I am mostly indoors. Mostly it's to keep my spirits up, to have some fun experimenting with looks I'd never normally wear.

But I have had more than one boyfriend/husband/platonic straight male friend who has said he prefers women who don't wear makeup, and then when faced with the prospect of a woman or girl not wearing anything on her face, thinks she looks "tired" or "sick" or "not pulled together" or "messy." And with a little concealer and mascara and lip balm, bam! Now she looks like she's fine. Even my saintly Alexander is occasionally guilty of it -- if I have a small zit and I'm not wearing makeup to cover it, he gets distracted by it. And I notice his distraction, and when I ask, it's invariably, "Did you know you have a spot on your cheek?" (Yes, of course I do. Your trick is to not pay attention to it, like I ignore yours.)

Which sort of draws me to this: why is it that men are simply not subject to the same standards? K-pop boy bands apart, wearing concealer isn't a thing men are expected to do when they have dark circles or a zit to hide. But in order to get ahead, women need to primp, and yet not too much or we're accused of caring too much/looking slutty/etc.

Thought we could do with something that isn't coronavirus or election-related for a change. :)

I am a fan of minimalist make up, too many women put it on like bondo or look a little too much like Mimi from the drew carey show

It shouldn't matter what men think of what women do with their faces, or what other women think either, in my opinion. It's creative expression -- I love how different colors can make my eyes look more green, or how the flick of an eyeliner upwards changes their shape. How I can make my nose look longer or snubbed. How I can look like I've been basking on the Cote d'Azur for a couple of weeks, or icy cold like a winter witch. It's everyday costuming, and it can be terrific fun. I don't wear a lot in normal times, but these aren't normal times.

For me, a natural look suits. Sunblock, tinted moisturizer, concealer, some powder, a coat of mascara and a subtle lipstick, what they call "my lips but better" or MLBB in beauty junkie slang. Maybe a light touch of blush on the apples of my cheeks if I need a little brightening. I feel confident and pulled together. Because the reality is that women are judged every day on how they look, more so than men. We're supposed to look good without makeup, which in itself requires a lot of work, trust me, and it needs to look effortless. "Oh, I just woke up like this." Yeah, you woke up like that because of your $250 night cream and $175 serum and your trips to the derm! There's a fantastic article I remembered reading in The Cut a couple of years back on this, which I found just now which covers this very well, I think. https://www.thecut.com/2018/07/the-big-lie-of-no-makeup.html

We're quickly diverging into stuff more appropriate for the Beauty Thread...

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

Well, we'll bring it back to the question posed by the study: why would people find a woman wearing makeup more trustworthy than one not wearing any at all? I'm not talking about your reaction, but why do you think the study came up with the results that it did?

And here's another question: would people find a man wearing minimal makeup (say, tinted moisturizer and a brow gel, not a full face of slap) more or less trustworthy?

In the case of a women, assuming the makeup is esthetically appealing, women are expected to maintain a certain level, guys get a free pass

didn’t realize brow gel was even a thing,

Yeah, brow gel is something I thought of as old-fashioned and weird as a teenager and young woman, but brows are a big thing now. Brow gel is no-fuss and can be very natural.

Men do get a free pass, which is infuriating (see my comment above about spot-spotting). I look "tired" while he looks, well, like himself. Throughout the winter he looked pale because that's his natural skin tone. I looked paler (especially when I had that terrible virus at Christmas) but only I got asked about whether I was unwell when I wasn't. He told me that the patriarchy has come up with the double standard so that men can get a longer lie-in in the mornings.
