Question, what are you trying to keep from your husband? Your address, your SSN, or both? Because, as far as I know, SSNs are not supposed to be part of a public court filing, and if part of a filing document, it has to be redacted. What city/state will you be filing?

I'm glad to hear that you got your GC and SSN. Keep them safe. What you can do is call a divorce lawyer. First consultation is free. Ask your question. I'm with you. I wouldn't want my SSN on those forms either. But don't use someone else's SSN as someone suggested. That's ID theft and illegal. Good luck and stay safe.

Well I prefer both but if it's not possible then I'll use my friends address, but definitely don't want him to know my SSN.

I'm not trying to get anything from him.

I printed out the forms and the SSN numbers are on the final judgment, so he will get that at the end with my ssn all over it. this is what I am trying to avoid, I will use my friends address.

Miss?  no divorce decree has a SS number

You are not listening to us.  Where did you fill out the forms because it sounds like you just handed over your identity to a random website

Pretty sure that's illegal.

I didnt complete that sentence.  Using someone else’s SS number is illegal.

You were advised to leave the SS blank

You have to provide a physical address for service.

Using someone’s SS number is against the law

Leave the SS number blank and file it

I didnt get a chance to edit that

I didn't file anything yet, I used the government website to download the forms and the DIY forms for NY have the SSN numbers on the "Judgment of divorce".

I didn't hand out any information to anyone, I am not that stupid.

Your husband will get a copy of the divorce decree, it will show the address but no social #. Use your friend address if that's your only option and you can use a p.o box as well. Good luck

In NYC:

Information to Redact (CPI)

The Court wants you to leave out private information about yourself and others when you file your papers. This information is called confidential personal information or CPI. Here is the list of the CPI to redact and how to redact it:

  • Taxpayer ID numbers, social security numbers, and employer ID numbers are redacted by leaving out everything but the last four numbers. For example: xxx-xx-1234.
  • Dates of birth are redacted by leaving out everything but the year. For example: xx/xx/1996.

Redaction rules apply to Supreme, County, District, City, Civil, Town, and Village Courts. The rules do not apply to Family, Criminal or Surrogate’s Court cases. Also, papers do not have to be redacted in the following types of cases:

  • divorce
  • Article 81 of the Mental Hygiene Law
  • name changes
  • Vehicle and Traffic Law
  • violation of a city, town or village ordinance

so in Divorce cases not required to redact your SSN but you can 😃👍

I really don't want to spend money on a lawyer...

Can I use a Po Box

Resource for Divorce Legal Services if you qualify:

  • If you live in the New York City area, go to the Collaborative Family Law Center to learn if you may be eligible for reduced-fee or free collaborative law services through a court-sponsored pilot program.

I am not sure but I think this actually means that I can't do that with divorce papers.

It means that you are not required to redact SSN in divorce proceedings, but you allowed to redact. In your case, you would want to redact.
