I agree.  I used to be a preschool teacher and I was told to come in even when I had fever.  It was ridiculous.  When I would get a doctor's note that said I had to stay home she would want the diagnosis written on it.  She constantly questioned me about my medical history.  I was so happy to quit that job.

It's the same logic really. If you're around preschool kids you're going to be highly exposed to pathogens. If a preschool kid misses every single day they have general symptoms of illness, they barely go. Ridiculous. Parents understand this very quickly so unless the kid is with a very high fever, vomiting, or has something dangerous+contagious, they go anyways. Things function due to consistency/reliability, even in the face of life full of unpredictable things.

The more time you take off, the less reliable you are. In a job that clearly oversees a number of others, it likely is a different work environment than someone staffed in retail who's shift can be easily taken by someone else.

Certainly there are employers who unjustifiably try and play doctor, they are likely not employers you want to stay with. However, an understanding of environmental standards (which you should have when you get into an industry) and that they may need to be relied on to work when not in the best of conditions is something the employee may need to have as well. I'm a big fan of more modern work-life balance in HRM but some people have expectations that are flat out unrealistic.
