You shouldn't get 2 SSNs. SSNs are issued to an individual and (barring unusual circumstances) are issued for life.

The SSA should see it and match it up.

In the rare event they somehow fail to match it up and do issue 2 SSNs, contact the SSA to have them resolve it with whichever one they want you to use.

You're amazing, thank you. I wanted to wait til I got one through my I-765, but there are so many other things you need a SSN for than just employment and if I can get one sooner I want to!

What exactly are the other things someone needs an SSN for sooner than later?

Trying to figure out pros and cons of how to obtain one during this time. We don't want to mail out my passport to the SSA office as its an original document, so we are leaning towards filling out "yes" for the SSA to issue a new SSN on the i-765.

I asked to have a SSN to be issued through my I-765 as well (filed 1 month ago), but yesterday I was able to get an appointment at my local social security office and the person who interviewed me did not seem to be concerned that I requested one on my I-765. She said in the rare ocassion that I get issued 2 numbers that I need to contact them to get it fixed.

thats great! I have called about 6 different offices to which I get different answers. I have pleaded my case to all and can't get an in person meeting.

Did your I-94 expire? My worry is that even if I can get into an office soon, my i-94 will then be expired.

I called on many occassions also and told them that I really wanted to get one before my I-94 expires. Mine expires mid June. The social security office (depending on which one) considers having a job offer/ need for health insurance as a "dire need" to get a SSN. If you need a SSN to apply for state funded health insurance, I believe they will grant you an appointment. This is unusual, because many people say you do not need a SSN to get access to health insurance. Everyone says something different it seems.

You can always politely ask for a supervisor.

I was able to put my wife, K-1, and daughter, K-2, on my health insurance. We got my wife a social security number right away upon entering the US. The K-2 can't get one until the EAD comes. I ran into trouble trying to change my wife's name on the social security card after we got married. We took the marriage certificate twice to the local SS office, but the first time we got a woman who said she has been working at the SS office for 35 years and she knows we need to get an extension on my wife's K-1 visa, which is not possible. I spoke to someone at the information desk and he said she was wrong. We waited again and they never called us back to the window. I asked again at the window and someone else was there and said we couldn't do it, or shouldn't. He asked who told us that we couldn't originally and we pointed out the woman we first spoke to, and he said, "she's been working here 35 years!" lol I returned and tried again with someone else, but he said we needed the EAD to change the name. Whatever, doesn't make sense to me. We are just waiting now for the EAD

Oh, about the insurance. I signed both of them up for my health insurance through work with no problem, but I got two letters from the health insurance company to call them about my K-2s social security number and that it was required by the government. I explained the situation - that we are waiting for immigration, and they finally relented for now. They have honored our claims for a physical exam and one trip to the urgent care for the K-2, so everything is OK for now.

We've filed twice now for AOS and been rejected. The form they stopped accepting in February was the first reason, then the second time I sent only one 864 since they were both on the one form. They rejected everything until I resubmit with two 864s. I sent everything a couple days ago USPS and it should be received on Saturday 5/16, so now I am a May filer.

I heard that some AOS are getting their combo card quickly, is that true? We want to visit her family as soon as we can.

Note that the actual requirement, per the POMS, is 14 days of legal status left. So the I-94 has to have at least 14 days left at the time you apply.

A job offer does not need an SSN. Being authorized for work does.

An SSN is not needed for health insurance. Any ACA-compliant plan is actually explicitly prohibited from requiring an SSN.

Sorry for any miscommunication. I didn't say you needed a SSN for health insurance or for a job offer. I said that the SSA considers those two things as reasons to request a SSN during COVID-19 closures to get a face to face interview. This information was given to me by my local SSA when I called them. Just relaying that info here.

If the ssn cards haven’t arrived in 4 weeks, then go to the SSA office and apply

Need to call and have an appointment made, as offices are closed due to COVID-19
