K2 child - SSN eligibility?

After several years and not being able to get a SSN for my step daughter (K2 green card holder, minor), my wife has a bunch of her friends telling her that we should have gotten an SSN for our daughter during the visa process. I never saw such an option on the K2 application. Every time I asked the SSN administration they said she was ineligible. Now a lawyer tells my wife it's possible and should be done. I want to know if anyone with a K1 spouse (still holding a green card) has K2 children with SSNs. If yes, how was this accomplished?

If you got a green card (filed their AOS) for the child then you simply wait for the Social Security offices to open. If you filed for an EAD then it should have come if you checked the BOX.

For someone coming along looking at this post later - you can and should do the SSNs when first arriving to the US.

I was told she wasn't eligible, and there was no box to check for K2 dependents.

Not eligible upon arrival but eligible once EAD or GC is approved.

YMMV

According to everything I have seen like the attached webpage, K2 green card holders must apply for a work permit to get a social security number. I'd like somebody to prove that is not the case. How does a 12 year old child get a work permit in the first place? That's the basic problem, everybody says it's possible but nobody's reading the fine print.

A 12 yr old gets a work permit just like everyone else by applying for it via an i765.  I hate to bust your bubble but a GC is also a work permit,  in fact the penultimate work permit short of citizenship

YMMV

Did you apply for the child's green card?

Free with the AOS!   and makes the kid a dependent on your taxes!

She has a GC, so I can simply complete her EAD? That would be great.

If she has a green card then she doesn’t need an EAD. EAD is used until the AOS process is completed.

Some of your terminology is quite confusing too.. there’s no such thing as a K1 or K2 GC. K1/2 is the visa used to enter the US.  Complying with the requirements of the K1/2 visa then makes the person eligible to adjust their status to that of a lawful permanent resident ... evidence of LPR status is the Green Card
Once the SSA offices open , go there with child’s GC, passport and birth certificate and apply for a SSN

No.  A green card IS work authorization.  You have everything you need to get an SSN already

By filing an I-765, or upon getting a green card, just like everybody else.

That doesn't mean they need to work (or should do so...restrictions for children working are very strict).

I've read large sections of the SS POMS, specifically those covering the issuance of SSNs to non-citizens.
