Sorry, my head is all over the place and I didn't explain it well at all. I tried to download the desktop TurboTax and it told me the FREE version was for 1040 only, whereas it looks like I need Schedule 1 and 2555 on top of that:

 

*A simple tax return is Form 1040 only, without any additional schedules.

 

I'm going back to paper filing the 1040, Schedule 1 and 2555. We'll try to get them done and send them to Austin, TX.

No, TurboTax will not be free.  You can download for 29.99. Does it just cater to one user? For example. this will be for my wife. I'm wondering if I'll be able to use it in a year or so, when I'm in a position to be filing with green card. That, or if we can then start filing jointly.

All tax programs are for one specific year. Tax laws, rates, and deductions change annually so they write new software. Just look for the best price.

 

If you’re in the US, you can buy the version that includes your state income tax program (for the state where you live). Typically there are offers at stores in January. I bought TurboTax Deluxe for 29.88. It was special offer. I didn’t need a version that included the state software because Texas doesn’t have a state income tax. State typically adds $10.

 

With the yearly version you can do as many tax returns as you want and try different scenarios by saving each under a unique file name.
