I would argue the opposite:

Religious indoctrination is a good thing because religious people are more likely to donate money and time to the needy.

btw, this is an obvious troll thread that is offensive and not well thought out.

I think wether or not someone is going to be more compassionate to other people depends more on the person and the environment in which they are raised.

I know religious conservatives that would not lift a finger to help someone outside of their church, or even sometimes within thier church, and I know atheists who would spend alot of time volunteering and what not. Which would go against that statement.

Alex, I guess my point is religious belief isn't just 'you must believe it because it's been handed down', and if it is, in the vast majority of forms, it's no worse than your parents teaching you right from wrong, which probably was as simple as reward/punishment until you were old enough to understand. You learn 'don't steal because it's wrong' and later you learn 'don't steal because theories of property ownership entail that property rights are one to be respected.'

There are certainly crazy loons indoctrinating their children to believe horrible things. But that's hardly all religious education, and to conflate sunday school with Jesus camp, let alone religious education with child abuse, to me seems over the top.

Noting that the thread is started by someone who probably would not have had an education had there not been a religious component in establishing the school ...

Ok, so maybe this thread was my way of crying out for help. I was abused! Can I get a hug?

I know this priest who gives special hugs....

But seriously, were you educated in a Catholic school?

But seriously, were you educated in a Catholic school?

The school I went to was established by the English in accordance with Church of England doctrine. It was meant for the children of the British personnel who were in India. When I attended, the Christian component was reduced to the minimum amount necessary to qualify as a 'minority institution' per Indian government guidelines. That let them qualify for some kind of grants I believe. Basically, the Lords prayer in the morning (father thou art in heaven haloed be thy name thy will be done blah blah blah) and a "Moral Studies" course till the 8th grade (watered down vaguely Christian moral education).

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

For S&J, that's par for the course.

In Catholic schools, the Catholic students get Catechism classes, the non-Catholics (rather obviously, vast majority) get moral science.

Most schools run by Christian denominations use the same approach of different lessons for those of the denomination vs. "outsiders".
