Exactly the same way they do it in Australia. The technology is available to do it.

Ok, I would like to see what video link they are using... Because the USG is not using Zoom at all due to security risks involved

Taking the oath can be done remotely.

How?

Before the online session starts -

Do you pledge allegiance to the USA?

A - Yes

B - No

You answer is as legal as when you filed the N400 online.

The immigration process caused me PTSD.

The article interestingly didn't mention all the new citizens being able to vote. I wonder why they left that out since immigrants are generally believed to vote Democratic and its being led by the Democrats. Hmmm...

I, however, am all for virtual ceremonies. In fact, I am for no ceremonies at all as I feel they are a waste of money. Yes, I skipped my high school grad, my college grad and I was married by a Justice of the Peace in his living room.I remember the time I spent in school instead of the couple hour formal ceremony of graduation. I do not regret saving my money on grad dresses, etc.

There really is no reason we "need" the ceremony. It is a formality.

I am one of those who's ceremony was cancelled 2 days before it was scheduled to be held. I want to vote. USCIS has already deemed me qualified to become a citizen so why do I need to proclaim it to the world in a formal ceremony? You could answer "no" to the oath questions and still get your citizenship.

That will be ending soon trust me. The DOD has already restricted the usage of Zoom due to the security risks and the rest of the departments will follow soon

It's actually increased. We were using WebEx more often until recently.

We also don't discuss or display PII, sensitive, or sensitive-enhanced information on those meetings. I wouldn't trust it for TS info either.

Edit: Anyway, with relation to some video conferencing technology being used for oath ceremonies, I don't think this is an issue. They are essentially public affairs already. The only issue would be security risks of people dropping in and disturbing the event....and that can pretty easily be avoided IMHO.

We actually switched over to Teams now because most people are teleworking right now. We can't use Zoom for anything related to work at all. Nobody but me can even do anything on the high side because I am the only one in the office.

Teams is our primary for our company as well. That's what we use internally. But the client sets their own rules for their meetings, and zoom has been the majority of it recently for a few government clients. 🤷‍♂️

As much as I have issues with Teams (multiple windows, please??), I do prefer it over Zoom personally for calls.

Yeah we were forced over to Teams and overall it is ok to use. Informally we still use Slack as good way to chat with each other because we don't everything we type recorded.

Ceremonies are overrated. I did the work for the degree, not to be recognized by people that don't really know me.

Some people like big weddings. Others are fine with a court wedding.

Some people like commencement. Others think it's a waste of time and effort.

Oath ceremonies are no different. Some people may want the "full experience". Others just want to become a USC and move along to their next accomplishment.

Debatable if we are on the downturn or not of this event...time will tell based upon how people act.

Exactly. I have crowd anxiety. Didn't attend my own graduation "ceremony", married in court only. The Oath was actually my biggest fear so far for this year and I am praying that attendance will become optional (even after covid) :)

Before some folks now suggest that I work on my issue - I choose to celebrate myself (and my accomplishments) the way I like it, not to be recognized by others. I can perfectly survive on a crowded airplane, but that's because I choose to :)

I don't care a bit to attend the oath ceremony in person. This pandemic situation is with us at LEAST until the end of this year and USCIS should adapt. They can't just sit and go to the "freeze mode". Those who want to attend in person can be given the option to wait for a few months and possibly in 2021 when things are settled to have oath ceremony but the rest can be done virtually similar to Australia oath ceremony.

As others have said, it should be optional. I'm not super excited about any crowd. Did attend my Bachelors Graduation "ceremony" but meh I would've been even without it.

Very good example as someone said above about the online / on screen reply / interview as legal as the n400 application you sent online.

Honestly I don't see it happening in the near future because you do have take the Naturalization oath. So how can that be done virtually?

and turn in the paper that ask about recent criminal history that the Immigration officer has to check over before the oath?

the ceremony is not fast as there is much to do before the actual oath

but wishing all of you that have completed the steps get to do the oath so you can vote this November

and don't forget to go to SS office with the naturaliztion paper to change your status for LPR to citizen

Each person is different, but for me I can't see any reason why I could not provide the recent history details and swear the oath at the end of the interview (even if not approved at that stage), then simply get the certificate in the mail.  I don't see any benefit of sitting around for hours with a thousand strangers just to have a ceremony.
