It is not necessarily pointless, it depends on the situation.  As a frequent visitor prior to my move, I was glad I had insurances while in the US - much better than travel insurance, and my husband's employer was paying for it.  Covered me if I travelled abroad also (care I received in Canada was covered by my provincial system, but had I lived in another country, without insurance, it would have been great to get covered.  

It would have been silly not to get it.

True. Pointless in the vast majority of cases...there are edge cases where the cost versus time within the US can be beneficial over a travel insurance plan.

Travel Insurance and US Health Insurance are very different beasts and not really comparable.

A plan they can actually use where they live would arguably show more care.

 

No doubts on having a plan ready for when they arrive - even if it has to be purchased beforehand to be active upon the day of arrival.
