Hi. My wife just came to US on cr1 visa last week.  As she is waiting for her green card and social security card to arrive is it possible to get her health insurance before gc and ss arrives? I currently have insurance through medicaid can i add her on my plan? Answers much appreciated.

Yes, you can add her to your insurance.

Question, how is she on medicaid? Immigrants are not allowed to use medicaid upon arrival. Search for public charge rule. It can cause problems later.

She cant use medicaid as a new immigrant for next five years. She can get a job which can provide employer sponsored insurance or you can buy private insurance.

Well she would not qualify for Medicaid, she should be able to buy through the Exchange.

The state exchange has a program on nystateofhealth.com its not medicaid but essential plan provied by state. Is that also considered public charge?

The nystateofhealth has essential plan for low income nyrkers. Its not considered medicaid. Will that be a problem for her?

Tax credits are OK, direct Government subsidy is the issue.

SSN and Health Insurance are two separate issues. I just walked into the local office to get mine, now that may not be possible at the moment, you would need to find out how your local office is handling this.

You are CR1 >Boiler came on K1 and the way ss # is issued is different than for a spouse

Did you mark the spot on DS 260 for USCIS to do the SS # for you ?

If not,  you can go online and follow the procedure for an application

I got medical for my husband and he isn't even in the United States yet. I don't know why anyone would not let you add a person.
