Guess where they're getting their guns from.
Hint: It's the country that lets pretty much anyone buy a gun.

Quote

Of the 132,823 guns recovered at crime scenes in Mexico from 2009 to 2018, fully 70% were found to have originated in the U.S. — primarily in Southwest border states, most commonly Texas.

Most firearms trafficked to Mexico are bought legally at gun shows or stores by people known as “straw purchasers,” who then hand them off to cartels or middlemen.

Not only is the US's lax gun policy responsible for gun violence rates in the US, it's also responsible for an absurd amount of deaths beyond its borders.

said article is behind a pay wall....

if your linked article is one of those claiming "90 percent of all guns used in drug-related crimes in Mexico come from the United States." then that has been debunked already - it's NOT the amount of guns used, it's in reference to the amount

of serial numbers submitted to the usa for tracing.  see below:

from https://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=103224899

"Mexican officials submitted a little over 12,000 guns to the ATF to be traced, and the year before that, about 6,500. Some statistics suggest that that's about a third of all the guns that have been recovered in Mexico. "
"He said that almost all of the handguns that are confiscated in Mexico come from the United States. And that amongst the assault weapons, while a good number of them are coming from the United States, they're also - that's more of a mixed bag. And they're coming, as well, through some of the drug routes in Eastern Europe and Africa. "

(on the last line - ever heard of operation fast and furious?  how about theft?)

additionally, about gun smuggling into mexico:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smuggling_of_firearms_into_Mexico

overall, it sounds like a good reason for border control by mexico.........

It's not? I was able to read the article just fine.

Did you even try to read my post or did you just instinctively respond with a standard reply without reading? The portion I quoted didn't even mention 90%, it also said crime scenes, not sure why you're mixing up stats unless it's deliberate.

What do you actually know about US gun policy? Serious question.

I've read enough about it to be well-informed and I'm friends with more than a few people ranging from casual gun owners to collectors who post about local policies and regulation on their social media on a regular basis. A few of them have also let me crash on their couch once or twice a year for a month or longer since 2008. I've gone shooting more than a couple of times (both at ranges and on RV trips to the woods) and I've been to 8 or 9 gun shows with one of them to pick up ammo and look around. I've also been harassed by old NRA dudes at Cabela's twice over the years because I didn't want to sign up for a stupid membership to their stupid organization.

So probably more than people here know about other country's gun policies?

So how easy is it to buy a gun? What are the requirements?

What state are we talking about, or do you just expect me to write a book about every state's varying laws?

How about Massachusetts where I live?

Why would I put in the time to type out any of it out if I'm just going to get accused of using Google? Clearly no one here is actually interested in a factual discussion on any topic anyway.

Yes, because I definitely also didn't mention reading and staying up to date on policy.

It's easier to compare apples to apples. I guess we'll see if this current ban changes anything in Canada. Many firearm classes are already prohibited or restricted in Canada. The majority of guns used in criminal activity in Canada are not obtained legally anyway. Historically smuggling them in from the US was the biggest issue, but in recent years there have been more issues with straw purchases and illegal resales of guns that were originally obtained legally. They need get all those things under control to reduce criminal activity.

Authorities said Wortman did not have a police record, but information later emerged of at least one run-in with the law. Nova Scotia court records confirm he was ordered to receive counseling for anger management after pleading guilty to assaulting a man in the Halifax area on Oct. 29, 2001.

The guilty plea came on Oct. 7, 2002, as his trial was about to begin. He was placed on probation for nine months, fined $50 and told to stay away from the man, and also prohibited from owning or possessing a weapon, ammunition or explosive substances.

It has since been detailed that Wortman did not have a valid firearms license (PAL). He was not one of the millions of vetted, trained, responsible Canadians legally authorized to possess/own a firearm.

so again, someone who's not supposed to have firearms..............

Right, so how did he get one is the question?

Years ago the focus of Canadian LE was on stopping black market sales from the USA. Nowadays they are spending a lot more resources trying to address illegal resales within Canada. There is no constitutional right to gun ownership in Canada, so when the trend becomes legal gun owners reselling guns illegally, there is no huge debate about rights. Laws will address the illegal activity. They were looking at doing this since 2017. It was only a matter of when, not if.
