Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday announced that assault-style firearms would be banned in the country.

The announcement follows Trudeau's vow to push for stricter gun control after a mass shooting in Nova Scotia ended with 23 dead on April 19.

Beginning on Friday, around 1,500 makes and models of military-grade firearm weapons would be banned from licensed gun owners to sell, transport, import or use in the country, according to CBC News.

Public Safety Minister Bill Blair affirmed the order, saying, "As of today, the market for assault weapons in Canada is closed."

Symbolic feel good move that will have little effect on gun control. I dont know much about what is what in Canada. but here assault style weapons account for a very micro percent of gun crimes.

But it makes good press

I know the per capita number of firearms is way less that here. I don't really know the distribution. It's interesting to see what it accomplishes, if anything. Likely won't reduce numbers overall, and likely also won't lead to the slippery slope where they take away every gun. I guess they will take some though.

Because clearly banning guns hasn't worked in any other country and every country on the planet has to deal with mass shootings on a regular basis. Oh wait, they don't.

Yes. That's why I posted it. Because, once again, it applies here.

Other countries have successfully either severely limited or gotten completely rid of mass shootings or shootings in general by banning or heavily regulating guns, and yet again America goes "Gun control doesn't work. Who knows what works? Definitely not gun control."

If people prefer to be free of the second amendment and prominent gun ownership, the beauty of having the freedom of movement is the ability to head north. Freedoms aren't negotiable.

Yes, that's why kids have active shooter drills in school. Because freedom.

It's pretty telling that you're framing it that way, "free of the second amendment". Even if immigration was that simple, people shouldn't just move if they don't want to live somewhere they're pretty likely to be shot at some point in their life. Laws can change. Amendments can be amended.

Your freedom to feel like a tough guy by shooting paper targets and possibly also people shouldn't take priority over people's freedom to life. Apparently that freedom is negotiable?

Shooting paper targets is safer than driving to your local supermarket.

Do you think the USA is special with this?

They only think that when it works for them. They're the same people complaining about illegal immigrants and the US having open borders.

It's when those guns are being used for things other than shooting paper targets.
