No you dont need to change name in passport ASAP, if you do travel, just use name in passport for the name on any airline tickets, and have a copy of marriage cert handy to show connection between passport name, and green card name.

For info on how to change name look here:

HI,

Do you know someone that has gone out of the country by buying the ticket under the maiden name but has the greencard in the new name? Other threads have said to buy ticket under married name and bring marriage certificate and leave passport under maiden name.

HI,

I have travelled three times out of the US since I was married, twice with my green card (which is in my married name). I booked my tickets in my maiden name, to match my passport. I also took a certified copy of my marriage certificate. haven't had a problem with that yet.

You need your passport to travel, can't leave it at home!

I have never been asked that question going through US Customs, or airport security.

Cassie,

What documents do you show them when you leave the US? Do you have to show them your GC, ID and passport? What do you show Canada? When you renter the US what do you show them?

When I leave the US -- ie. go through airport security, check in at the ticket counter -- I show them my passport. I do not show additional ID.

When I enter Canada, I show them my passport, and have my green card ready if asked for it.

When I re-enter the US at the PFI, I show my green card. I was asked for my passport once, where it got stamped.

I carry a certified copy of my marriage certificate whenever I travel to verify the discrepancies in my last name.

The next time I travel, if I do not have my 10 year green card at that time, I will travel with my I-751 NOA1 as well.

I've travelled with my former name and carried my marriage certificate (which they didn't ask to see). The US agent in secondary at the airport gave me a hard time about not changing my name in my passport, even though my AP reflected my old name and not my married name. I was polite and told him I would be changing it. I am travelling out of the country again in a few weeks so it will be interesting to see what happens at that POE, since it will not be the same as the first.

I have chosen not to change my passport name until the current passport expires in 2009. There are two reasons for this.... 1. It's an unnecessary expense, and; 2. The current delay in passport issuance is unacceptable to me at this time, as they are flooded with applications by people rushing to comply with new travel regulations. I cannot afford to be without my passport for the forseeable future so I shall wait and pray that the long timeframes are temporary.
