You could always put your stuff on craigslist too!

But man, it really is difficult getting people to take stuff.

A friend had promised to take all my furniture but due to unforeseen circumstances, he couldn't. I couldn't take it anywhere (no car and charities no longer pick up). I ran out of time, didn't get a chance to clean, ended up leaving a lot of furniture and dishes and #######. I felt horrible but we had rental cars waiting. I ended up slipping a few hundred dollars into an envelope and slipping it under my landlord's door with a note hoping that it would cover the cost of cleaning (really that shouldn't have been a lot to do) and hauling the stuff out.

Also, if you make a donation of things to Goodwill, they will give you a tax receipt for their value that you can use when you file your final taxes next year. I made several trips to Goodwill and had a really nice deduction.

And yes, start your garage sales now - you may find you need more than one. Decide what you absolutely need to have as a minimum, then box up or sell or give away everything else now. I had some antiques/collectibles that I didn't need to keep so I also donated them to the museum in exchange for an income tax receipt.

So true! First, I got the word out with my parents telling anyone who asked that I was selling 99% of my furniture -- it was a perfect time (end of summer) because a bunch of it was sold to parents buying stuff for their kids going to university. Made $600 doing that. Then my parents and I had a massive yard sale after I packed up my apartment -- the amount of stuff I had collected over the years was staggering -- made $300 bucks on that one. Then Jerry and I had another big yard sale once my stuff was finally shipped to the US and we found out what we had duplicates of, decorator stuff that didn't really go with how we were arranging the house, etc etc. Made another $200 bucks that way too!

Other ideas for your stuff:

--clothes: women's shelters, Goodwill, local hospital fundraising stores

--books: local library

--magazines: local hospital auxiliary for the waiting rooms

etc etc
