How many people have been sought help from immigration lawyers ??...And do you think it sped up the process or is it a waste of money ???

I've never read or heard anyone who has ever used a lawyer in the immigration process say, "Wow! What a great way to spend THAT money. I'm so glad I did!" lol. In fact, just the opposite. Most people I've heard from have found Immigration attorneys to be an expensive way of getting done what they absolutely could have done themselves if they'd just take a bit of time to do their homework here at VJ.

That said, I've also read advice from people saying that if you have something "sticky" in your situation such as an overstay in the U.S. or some other bumpy issue, you really should invest in an attorney.

But if you have a fairly "clean" history, then you can certainly do it on your own and probably do it more speedily as well!

2007:

February - May: extended visit to States, engagement.

5/4: I-129F sent (Texas Service Center, forwarded to California Service Center)

5/11: Petition received at California Service Center.

5/16: Check cleared. NOA1 online (no hard copy received yet)

6/19: NOA1 hard copy arrived FINALLY

7/16: Sent off for Police Certificate (U.K.)

8/22: TOUCHED due to phone call (RFE Trick, was told case wasn't assigned yet)

9/20:APPROVED!!! After 127 days from NOA1 and 139 days from filing date.

10/23: Spoke to Kelly at NVC who said they should have received our petition by now. She advised I send a copy of our NOA2 directly to the NVC office, which I did immediately. :-)

10/26: NVC RECEIVES CASE!

10/30: NVC SENDS CASE TO LONDON CONSULATE

11/1: Consulate receives case in London AND sends out Packet 3.

11/6: Sent Packet 3 to Consulate (we'd downloaded the forms on VJ and had them completed already)

11/22: Appointment for Medical.

2008:

01/08: Interview scheduled for 10 a.m. APPROVED!!!

02/01/08: Stephen comes to America!!!

Here is my take on this ( by BTW this would be good to post in the main forum)

Hiring an Immigration Attorney is not a waste of money if your case justifies it or if one is unsire on the entire process.

As with most things it i sbest to do it correctly with the guidance of professional help rather than doing things wrong, missing documents filing incorrectly and further delaying or risking a denial.

That being said, A little research time spent in READING instructions on immigration forms, for most AOS cases so long as beneficioary was found to be in violation of USCIS policies ( undocumented cect..) thne most couples can file them selves.

I filed for my wife , did the entire process myself

The total cost including copy and rpinting fees, mailing fees, country registrar fees ect.

was just under $1000.00 We were approved & had 10 Year GC in Hand inside of 7 months from filing date.

Another lesss costly alternative is using the services of a Legal Doucment Assistant who will file everything for you be sure everything is correct and do everything an attornety would do except offer legal advice. Our friends used an LDA and it cost them 600.00 verzsus attorney fees that would have rainged between 2500- 5000 $$$

I have only heard people complainuing when using attorneys, Attorneys have a tendancy to sit on cases and there is a middle man ( the attroney ) that often delays the processing of a case.

If your case is simple AOS then anyone who can read & Comprehend the English language can file themselves.

All the resources all available and very clear on what the process is.

our lawyer was a total waste of money.... he didn't seem to know what he was doing and basically all he did was fill out forms (incorrectly most of the time  )

my hubby basically just picked a name out of the phone book and went with that one...

I think if you do need a lawyer you need to shop around and find the best one....

I've never read or heard anyone who has ever used a lawyer in the immigration process say, "Wow! What a great way to spend THAT money. I'm so glad I did!"

I've worked with an immigration lawyer when I first immigrated and it was a very positive experience. So positive, in fact, that I went back to said lawyer when I was looking to bring my wife here. The lawyer advised me - free of charge and she still remembered every freaking detail of my case some 7 years later - on the process and assured me that I should not have any problem doing it myself. Which I did for the most part. I did file the I-129F petition (for the K3 visa) through the attorney's office, though. Just because it made me feel good. Knowing that every t will be crossed and every i dotted was worth every cent of those $800.00 to me.

I referred friends over to said attorney that had nothing but positive experiences. One of my friends brought her hubby over here from Switzerland in a matter of 16 days - that was a DCF CR1 from start to finish.

There are azzhole attorneys out there for sure. But there are great one's, too. Let's not generalize the entire profession.
