Thank you all for the input. In rereading the above chain, I apologise if I have come across as snarky or irritated in my response; I realise everyone here wants the best for everyone else (or if you don't, dunno why you are here!!). I am sure I am expressing a widely held feeling of intense frustration and helplessness at both the Covid situation and US immigration... it will all get sorted eventually.
