Locally, just heard the 5th worker at the JBS packing plant has died of Covid-19. Many workers were out sick before they finally got shut down and 100's testing positive.  They were warned by the state prior to that that there protocols were inadequate, and employees were saying they were pressured to show up even if they were sick.

If they had put effective precautions in place earlier, they may have prevented the scale of this, and we may not have this situation with plants being force to close. Unfortunately many employers didn't care. They were not willing to do that ahead of time. Now we face the consequences.

And many employees live paycheck to paycheck and go to work no matter what. There is little or no concern if they infect others.

Not just the employers, but maybe the employees themselves were casual with or actually ignored protective instructions.  We don't really know.

It's still on the employer to have protocols in place. I don't get a choice. If I have symptoms I get turned around at the door. Even without symptoms I wear a mask and get temps taken twice a shift. Employers need to be proactive.

I don't get this article. Killing them as opposed to what? They're making it sound like they feel bad for killing the animals they were going to slaughter in the first place. Overcrowding wouldn't be an issue if they temporarily stopped adding pigs, it's not like they can't start again once those plants reopen.

The modern systems don't quite work that way, there is quite a bit of JIT supply chain and seasonality involved in all good systems.

Still, if you cannot keep your employees healthy to pick, feed, sow, harvest and process your food, you will be in a world of pain within weeks.

Fine. It still feels weird to frame it like they feel sorry for the animals.
