I have been married to my Nigerian husband for 2 months and we are now trying to get documents together to have him join me. I have seen many people submit the documents to immigration on their own and I have also seen people use an immigration lawyer to file. Is it better to do the immigration process on my own or get a lawyer? P.s...this travel ban sucks. Hopefully it's over soon. My timeline will be updated soon.

Nigeria is now on the list of banned countries (not just the travel ban)

get all documents together,  make your application following the guidelines above and USCIS and NVC will process normally while we all wait for the ban to be lifted for Nigeria

BTW  since asking about a lawyer i, personally ,  think waste of money unless there are issues like a criminal offense or other unusual circumstances but this is only my opinion

lawyer takes your money,  you have to do all the work to get the needed documents and he / she copies and mails them in with the application

if you need on here ,  many lawyers make mistakes and cause a lot of issues (like one did not include a child on the application) so if you do use one,  make sure you read carefully what he/she is sending in

Whether to do it yourself or not depends on a number of factors including your own attitude, aptitude, and actual abilities, along with the circumstances of your case.  Visajourney has a partner page for good reason.  https://www.visajourney.com/partners/

As long as you have a guide you don't need a lawyer. I have one and I think it is a waste of money, they don't care about your case they just want your money, I had to upload my own documents because they are not desperate to like we are. When you get to the NVC stage they are as lost as you are so I think is worthless. just make sure you do some reading and research, you will find your answer.

I agree. Even though the process is simple and there is a lot of help available online, not everyone has time, resources, or ability to do it themselves.

FYI if you do hire a lawyer, the gathering of all documents and evidence will still be work that you will do by yourself. The lawyer will be there just to file and double check all the work that you do. A lawyer isn't going to come to your house and go through all your bank statements/taxes/financial docs, photos of you and your spouse, or gather any other evidence - that all falls on you, lawyer or no lawyer. Generally speaking, a lawyer isn't necessary unless the case has significant red flags to overcome or a criminal background.

It's true that no matter how much you pay the lawyer, they will not care about your case as much as you do because it is just another case to them. If you don't mind paperwork and can set aside time for that, DIY is the way to go. Plus, check out our awesome guides here on VJ.
