Hi all,

I just moved to Georgia and married my USC spouse. I was waiting on the marriage certificate before getting my licence as I changed my last name to his.

I’m from the U.K. and wondering if I can swap my licence for a Georgia licence, or if I will have to take the tests etc from scratch?

Thanks and stay safe!

Looks like you do have to pass some tests even with a license exchange. Give Georgia DMV a call to confirm.

Thanks for the info!

yup I had called and one time they said I could swap it out and the other time they said I have to do the tests. So I thought I’d check here if someone has been through it and can clarify!

everything i've seen says you need to do the written, and road test...sigh... I am moving there from Canada, and looks like i'll have to do that. My wife still had her driver's license (valid for 10 years) and she's moving back before me.

If you get any luck swapping DL, let me know, that'd be great news!

So...

it is true that you need to do both the written and road test. However due to COVID-19, the governor has signed an order to waive the road test right now as it’s unsafe for the examiner to be in the car with you.

Therefore, if you pass the written test right now, you automatically get the full licence 🙂

however, they do look you up in the immigration system. Unfortunately, because I haven’t filed AOS, the system only knows me under my maiden name but I already got married. So I didn’t pass the immigration check.

I assume no name changes in your case as already married etc. So you should be fine! When are you moving?

An nice. Unfortunately, and I guess fortunately? I’ll be there when things will hopefully be back to normal. Wife moving in July but I still have the NVC stage pending and then the awful backlog at the consulate. So probably not before December...
