Hey! Sorry for jumping on this thread, but I'm also going through something similar. I was issued an L1B visa at the start of the year and I was meant to start my job in April. My start date was pushed back to June 1st, but as each day passes this is also looking really unlikely. I keep reading speculation/fake news about the potential for non-immigrants to be blocked entirely from entering the US at some point soon, which is making me nervous about my future in the US. I'm based in England and I'm looking at alternative routes into the US. Similarly to a lot of you, I'm considering Mexico to quarantine for 14 days but have no idea if this is actually going to be possible. Trying to work out how long to leave it before booking a flight, just in case it looks like things will open up instead! 😨

Yep, that's the big question of the moment, right? How long to wait? Or when to take the plunge and do something?

My Croatian fiance's visa expires June 21 and I've pretty much accepted the likelihood that he's not going to be able to get into the US before then.

When does your visa expire?

It's such a scary gamble. 😞My visa was valid for three years, but the issue is more about my job offer being retracted if I'm not there to start (which will void the visa). My partner is a US citizen, which is another huge incentive for me to make it across as soon as possible.

I have my fingers crossed that your fiance can make it over in time! I'm so sorry you're going through this. It really is such a crazy time.

Hoping on May 20th I can give good news and inspire all of you to travel elsewhere for 2 weeks! My K1 visa expires June 25th but the wait was making me really anxious. Especially because I had quit my job in March and I really had nothing to do at home besides overthink

I doubt that non-immigrants will be blocked entirely from entering the US soon. The first airlines are preparing to starting their business again. I got an email from KLM a couple days ago where they talked about that. I don't think that Trump is going to block non-immigrants from entering the US as his only goal has always been to stop immigration. Not only since corona, but for years. We have to wait and be patient.

Wow, I'm really surprised that your new employer would retract your job offer if you can't get to the US. I mean, that's completely out of your control. Crazy.

Thanks--I hope things work out for you as well! If you decide to go the Mexico route, be sure to post an update!

I am going to enter Mexico on May 21st. Luckily, my fiancé is Mexican and has tons of family I can stay with.

Currently waiting for the reply of CBP in San Francisco to see if they would actually let me enter the U.S. after 2 weeks in Mexico, but as it seems right now, there should´nt be an issue.

I guess I'm going to print out all kinds of government webpages to proof that I'm actually allowed to enter.

Wishing everybody here good luck!

Awesome. I am think of doing the same for my fiancee. Unfortunately, I do not have family there, though I speak Spanish (my parents were born in Puerto Rico). So I plan to meet her there, unless something else opens up.

The messages one gets in the news is mixed about whether the USA will lift the ban anytime soon. I do not count on it in May. Disney here in Florida is said to open up in July, but the international tourism participation remains unsure. Disney is a big European tourist destination here in Florida and the USA. I am not waiting to bring my fiancee over in July, her visa expires on July 8th.

I contacted the CDC and asked if they can authorize a waiver if someone flies into the USA from Austria with a fresh lab test testing negative for coronavirus. In the Vienna airport one can get a test before one boards the airplane for 190 Euros and get the results right there. They will issue a clean health certificate if test is negative and one can take that abroad. I will see what they say given the language in the proclamation that a CDC designee can determine the alien passenger would not pose a risk of spread in the USA.  It is my second try on this, but with additional information that Vienna airport can tests passengers right there and then, if they need it.

How would it help if Austrian is currently not flying?

Here is something interesting. Turkey wants to restart tourism on June 1. That could be an option. Turkey is not part of Schengen area ban.

Coronavirus: Turkey unveils plan to revive tourism with health and hygiene certificates. With safety measures and certificates of health, Turkey hopes to reassure travellers worried about Covid-19.

Turkey has recorded at least 137,000 coronavirus cases, putting it among the 10 worst-affected countries worldwide, and more than 3,700 Covid-19 deaths, which is among the worst 15.

To be fair the article does go into the issues.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

The problem is, with the amount of cases still out in the world, even without the probability that a second wave will hit when economies reopen or when the weather gets worse again, there's still a very real chance that other countries will close their borders or that the US will close its borders to them.
Worst case, other than getting it yourself, of course, is that you get to a 3rd country, they close their borders while you're there and there's no way of traveling through to the US or even get home again. Even if your country's local embassy gets you home, you've still wasted a ton of money on those travel expenses and you'd have to book a new flight to the US.

This is exactly why I think Mexico is still the better option. I honestly really doubt they will close the air borders anytime soon. The land borders are already closed. And even then... I got told from a mexican herself that she was able to cross the land border with a K1 visa recently. I personally wouldn’t risk it, but it’s happening.

I guess the worst case would be, to end up getting corona. I think we all know for sure that it’s a risky idea.
