Yes you can sign this form(DS-156), it is the DS-156K that you leave un-signed and sign in front of the consular officer.

This is false. You absolutely DO NOT sign the DS-156.

-G,

Well, there you have it - 1 'yes' from China and 1 'no' from Canada.

Unfortunately the VJ Embassy Info for Jakarta does not provide any guidance on this issue, nor do the visa pages on the embassy in Jakarta web site as far as I can see. Hopefully someone who has been through that consular section recently will see your post and can provide you with an answer based on their experience.

[EDIT] fwaguy gives you a good suggestion.

Yodrak

I am preparing for sending back Packet 3 on Wednesday and I would like a confirmation for putting my signature in DS-156 on no. 41 only. Is this correct ?

Thank You in advance,

-G

There is no swarn affidavit notation on DS-156 stateing that it needs to be signed before a consular officer, and the form can be signed before hand, my fiancee did this without any problems, DS-156K, and DS-230 part 2 (For immigrant visas line IR-1/CR-1) are sworn affidavits that must not be signed as stated on the instruction line that says "DO NOT WRITE BELOW THIS LINE... The consular officer will assist you in answering this part."

Again

DS-156 OK to sign before hand

DS-156K NOT OK TO SIGN BEFORE HAND.

DS-230 part 2 (FOR IR-1/CR-1 VISA) NOT OK TO SIGN BEFORE HAND.

While YuAndDan's evidence of signature requirement is logical and quite convincing... It is important to recognize that while it is good to know what might be operating procedure at many or most locations -

When dealing with process and procedures at the consulate level it is important not to make blanket, all encompassing statements of fact, because there will be an exception somewhere within the vast DOS consulate system. The final authority on these issues is your own individual consulate.

YMMV

Joe- your time line says you applied for a k1 visa. I suspect you are thinking of the instructions on the DS-156K.

That is not to be signed until you are instructed to by a consular.

There are no instruction on the DS-156 saying not to sign it before hand nor is there an instruction on the Montreal checklist not to sign it ( for a K3 visa) .
