More transparency is needed into how these deaths are being reported. In the UK the figures are under reported and are cases for only those that have passed away in hospital after being tested positive.

yeah, I know in France they just recently started counting people in nursing homes, so there was a spike when they added them all together. Other countries still aren't counting anyone other than those who died in the hospital and were confirmed prior to dying. Some people die at home without ever getting tested. Some of us look at the facts the way they are, and some like to view them through the lens of their very own predisposition.

The question is how long will it take these hospitals to recover?  I know if it were me, the last place I would want to go is to a hospital.  If I could put off anything elective such as an orthopedic procedure, I definitely would.

If it's anything like the UK, people should still be going into hospital for all emergency care as many will die without intervention. These are cases such as cardiac issues (heart attacks etc), emergency ops and sepsis etc. Hospitals should have capacity for these patients. The hospitals are split into cold (non-COVID) and hot units (COVID positive).

No electives until there is capacity to and safe to do so.

I believe I was pretty specific when I wrote this post, no?

But funny you should mention it, I actually just finished going over a pretty good presentation by oliver wyman, I recommend taking a look for more info:

https://www.oliverwyman.com/content/dam/oliver-wyman/v2/publications/2020/March/COVID-19-Primer.pdf

I have also posted this before which details the strategy in hong kong and singapore - https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2020/04/suppress-and-lift-hong-kong-and-singapore-say-they-have-coronavirus-strategy-works

and I've been saying recently that I expect active cases to peak sometime in the second week in May, which might be a good time for most states/countries to start gradually lifting restrictions. Many good ideas in the posts/links above on how to do that.

So...basically...a little more patience, and then we can start to slowly open things up. But we need to be careful, and any time there is a sign of a new outburst or hotspot, it needs to be dealt with before it spreads to the rest of the city/state/country. Isolate and block certain areas when need be not whole countries; Perform mass testing(500k-1 mil per day), as well as antibody testing; voluntary apps that make contact tracing easier; 14 day quarantine for high risk individuals or people who came across a known carrier; sanitizers and wipes everywhere - at the grocery store like they already do, every restaurant table, elevator, hotel room, store, office, etc; masks for close contact situations - ensure availability and educate on proper use; enforce social distance in public places including grocery stores and restaurants. tables can be 6 ft apart. only a certain number of people allowed inside per square footage, stores - pretty much the way they already do it, but with more enforcement(for example no one actually pays attention to the arrows); check fever of anyone entering a public place; house mild to moderate infected patients outside of their house(most infections happen at home), in empty facilities, if they agree; keep limiting gatherings of more than 20 people.

I probably didn't mention many other things that we can do. We don't have to stay in complete lockdown forever, but we need to realize we're going to have to deal with a sort of "new normal" for a while. Life as we know it has changed at the very least until we have better treatment and/or a vaccine, and in some ways, likely beyond that.

We will also need to watch the rate of infection. If it stays under 7%, I think we can continue with what's outlined above. If it gets out of hand, there might be need for stricter measures again temporarily until it subsides again.

I have alot of big vacations planned for this summer, one is already cancelled and one I had to move from june-july to july-august. I hope by then things open up a bit more. I have a vested interest in things not staying like this forever...I'll be the last person to say anything is necessary if I didn't actually believe it is.

Sure, in an emergency situation, but hospitals in the US make their money with elective work which has slowed to a crawl and medical staff is being laid off.  Even here in Detroit, one health system shut down an entire hospital since it was unused.  At some point this work will start coming back, but if something is truly elective, and did not require immediate attention, I would be steering clear of any hospital due to the potential of catching the virus there.

Yeah, we are in the exact same boat.  Errr.... plane.  My wife, who takes this virus VERY seriously, watched the Dr. Erickson videos today.  She was impressed with their presentation of facts, as well as their suggestions.  Says a lot, coming from a gal who has been raised to follow what the government says without question.  I think it helped calm some of her uncertainties about the disease itself.

Personally, I can’t wait to get back to Korea and Russia.  We hope to go in August, and I want to show the wife a little of Korea.  We planned to do that back in March, but of course other things occurred.  The wife actually did fly through Korea, but she stayed at a hotel at the airport as her layover was only 16 hours.  She had to fly back via Moscow/DC/Detroit.

Looks like Trumps handlers got smart and got him to cut back on the press conferences.

How long do you think he can resist? It's like when you wake up at 3am and you feel a slight curl of hunger in your belly and all you can think about is the box of Thin Mint Girl Scout cookies in the freezer. They're there, taunting you: come to me, you know you want to, you know how good it feels, don't let anyone tell you not to...

Not that I would have any familiarity with such thoughts. :innocent:
