Refund Verification Letter - VIRGINIA

Hello everyone,

 

Me and my USC husband filed joint taxes recently, I got my SSN a few weeks ago.

Just received in the mail a letter from the department of taxation of VA asking to go online to verify information so they can process the refund.

 

Has anyone received this letter before?

 

I looked it up and saw they do it to prevent fraud, but what could have been the red flags?

Could it be because it’s the 1st time my husband files as married or because I have a brand new SSN?

There were many issues last year with fraud and state returns and some refunds were even halted for a time. I think it is just a generic precautionary thing and not because they have specific suspicions about your return. Whatever ticked their box to send you a letter isn’t really a red flag in the sense that you are being monitored as suspicious. It’s more that they are protecting your refund from online hackers with an extra layer of security.
