Hi All,

My husband came on a K1 in September 2019 and we got married September 21, 2019 and almost immediately applied for his AOS, work permit and travel authorization. His EAD card (combi card) came end of March but we are waiting for his social security number. We applied for it at the same time with the other paperwork.

Our lawyer said it should have arrived within a couple of weeks after the EAD card, but it didn’t arrive. I called the Social Security line (General line, couldn’t get through to local office) and they said six weeks after the EAD arrives.

Any ideas all? It’s terrible that he got his EAD but still can’t even work without the SSN.

That's why you go to the SSA very soon after you enter the US and apply for a SSN. He could have had the SSN within four weeks after entering the US.

Well the is the right way and the lawyers way.   A K1 can apply for a SSN on arrival to the US upto 75 days before the I-94 expires with a few other terms.

That's incorrect.  You don't need a SSN to file the Adjustment of Status package....

. . . or vice versa!

They are independent.  But you can also trust that USCIS will send it to SSA or that SSA will see it correctly.

Sad how Lawyers who you would thing would know basic stuff like this screw things up.

Don't use that lawyer again. As a K-1 he SHOULD go and apply for his SSN within the first two weeks of arrival to make things easier in the future, like now for instance. It also makes things easier getting him a health insurance, bank accounts etc. There is zero reason to wait.

Sorry that it's too late for you now, but maybe this post/thread can help someone else. All you can do now is wait, either for the SSN to show up or for the SSA to open to the public again. Whichever comes first.

Sadly, few immigration lawyers are going to tell people "most people can and do handle marriage-based immigration without a lawyer or prep service; the real money -- and what our practice focuses on -- is in employment-based immigration".

Hey we are in the same boat (except my k2 is waiting)

He had is EAD approved march 18th   Still no SSN.

SSA is backed up due to office closures.  An individual on these forums got their EAD march 10th.. recevied SSN on april 15th (if i remember correctly)

I called SSA and they informed me they are not processing SSNs currently and that their website is wrong (lol)

It is currently just really delayed.

SSA website states it should arrive within 7 days after EAD, as others here have pointed put in the october filers forum, it took nearly a month.

P.S.  My k1 got her SSN within a month after arriving in the US.  It didnt delay anything.

But im glad to see someone else waiting still.
