Hey everyone, we are going through the paperwork to adjust status and are almost done however I have some questions regarding my name. Because of the virus we got legally married a month ago but are doing the ceremony later, we wanted therefore to wait until the ceremony to change my name. Therefore as of now I still have my same name so this is what I have been putting on my paperwork. Once we have the ceremony it seems as though I would then need to change my name to my married name on my passport, green card and social security card? I’m also not sure as an immigrant here how I legally change my name?

it’s all really confusing but basically I just want to check I’m okay to proceed with the paperwork to adjust status with my maiden name and when we do get married how I would go about changing my name and whether this is simple?

sorry if my question is confusing, I hope it makes sense!

You are married.  Save yourself hassle and expense.   Do everything in your married name now and simply do the symbolic ceremony in your "maiden" name when it happens

YMMV

Agree with @payxibka.  If you are going to use your married name in the future, I would adjust status in the married name......otherwise, you are creating a mess, imo.

If you apply in your maiden name, then your greencard will be in your maiden name. It will cost you $540 to change your name on it down the road when you realize you are using your married name everywhere else. Your husband’s name is your legal name the minute you married (if that’s the name you want to go by).

Change with SSN after you get a greencard.

Continue to use your current passport until it is about to expire if you like. Book tickets in passport name for less hassle at airline counter.
