I would agree (slim chances). Oh well....hmmmmm  perhaps the parent would be a better idea?   Just looking for some family help with the new baby.

May be best to look into hiring a doula, night nurse for the baby. You as parents to be should also take classes on baby care and cpr. You shouldn’t expect anyone to get a visa to provide childcare services when a USC or LPR can be hired.

No, and for the same reason:  you cannot bring relatives over to work (provide unpaid childcare) as an alternative to hiring a USC/LPR.

Well how about for a visit which it will be-- a chance to see the country, their daughter, and the new baby for a few months?

Sightseeing and visiting relatives are perfectly acceptable reasons to apply for a tourist visa.  But, if the consul suspects that the primary reason for the visit is actually to babysit for family, there is a good chance that the visa will not be granted.  In addition to convincing the consul of their strong ties to the Philippines, your parent-in-law must be able to justify why they need to stay a few months for a family visit.

Thanks Chancy....makes sense. Perhaps they are very nervous flying and would like to minimize flying while maximizing time spent with US family. Also, although they own a house, they are not wealthy and have no bank account; is that a factor?  thanks,

Nervousness when flying is definitely not a factor at all. They are mostly interested in a) why this person would return to their home county and b) what is the overall goal/purpose of the trip and if it aligns with the proper visa type.

Owning a house can be a factor, but it's not the only one. They want to see many strong ties and reasons for the applicant to return. For her case, having a job which would easily allow 6 months off is not a strong tie. Having a sister in the US creates a strong tie to the US, not the home country. Is the sister married?

Hi Millifleur,

The sister idea now appears out of reach and I'm considering my parent's in law. I don't see them has having a tangible reason to stay either. They both freelance selling fruit and doing construction probably under the table (Philippines). Their  real reason to go back home is the love of their family friends and country, none of which can be calculated.

thanks

Will be an uphill battle for them, given the history of parents from their country adjusting from B visas.  It is unfortunate that people do that to jump the line, because it just ruins things for others.

Doesn’t your wife even want to see her sister just because...she’s her sister? It’s not worth trying rather than just finding someone to replace her in babysitting duties?

Exactly people dont understand that you might succeed jumping the line and ADJST with your B2, but it makes it difficult for your relatives and others from your country to visit the USA. Things will just be better and orderly if we all stay inline except for extreme cases like COVID-19

I don't recommend your parent-in-law mention to the consul about being nervous about flying.  Maximizing time spent with family in the US may sound reasonable, but note that it casts doubt on the visitor's ties to home country.  Owning a house is not a compelling reason to return to the Philippines, especially if there are other adult family members who can take care of the house.

In any case, none of us here can say for sure whether they'll get a visa or not.  If you don't mind parting with $160 + travel expenses to the US embassy in Manila, ask your parent-in-law to apply (but keep your and their expectations low).  I hope you let us know how it goes so others may learn from their experience.  Good luck!
