Russia Passes Dual Citizenship Law, Hoping to Add 10M Citizens

 

Russian lawmakers from both houses of parliament have passed legislation Friday allowing dual Russian citizenship for foreigners, sending it to President Vladimir Putin’s desk less than two weeks after introducing it.

Lawmakers have described the amendments to Russia’s citizenship law, which among other steps strike down a requirement to renounce one's existing citizenship, as “revolutionary.” Their authors expect up to 10 million people, primarily from Russian-speaking populations in the former Soviet republics, to obtain Russian passports as the country tries to fix its demographic crisis.

Russia had a super weird law in place before this: basically, Russian citizens were allowed to obtain other citizenships, as in, they didn't really care if you obtained others and you could still keep Russian citizenship. But the flip side for non-Russians who wished to obtain citizenship were required to renounce their current in order to obtain Russian citizenship. So this law really just makes it way more fair and makes the dual citizenship situation go both ways, finally.

I am also interested in this.  I wonder what the requirements will be to obtain Russian citizenship.

We've been wondering whether it's worth the effort to get Russian citizenship for our son, though we've been leaning to not bothering.

Not difficult since one of his parents is a Russian citizen.

It will require some form of residency in Russia, but a much shorter requirement if married to a Russian citizen. We don't have solid, set plans to return to Russia for some years but down the road it's definitely something to look into for us depending on how things unfold. I'm just glad to know that if we do ever decide to move back one day that at least one aspect will be easier now.

Yes, more than likely a residency requirement would be necessary.  I asked my wife to look into it even though we really don’t have any plans to live in Russia.  My ideal situation would be a 10 year visitor visa/home stay visa.

I would love a 10 year visitor/home stay visa. I'm pleased that we have the option for a 3 year at least for now. I have to re-apply again soon as mine expired this year. I doubt they'll ever issue the 10 year visa unless the US also reciprocates though.

This is such outstanding news, I was so worried about having to renounce my USA citizenship. Finally, something good has happened. I've had all the paperwork done for my temporary residency permit for many, many months... like many other things, just waiting for corona to pass haha. Thanks for posting this!
