Trump says he will issue order to suspend immigration during coronavirus crisis, closing off the United States to a new extreme

“For Trump’s executive order to work, it would have to direct the State Department and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to immediately stop the issuance of immigration visas. Such a move appears to have no modern precedent and would potentially leave the fiancees, children and other close relatives of U.S. citizens in limbo.”

Article has a paywall. That's helpful info though. Thanks for sharing.

This has made me physically ill.

Temporary or not... how long is temporary?

Before I met my fiance, I was single since 2012. Never really was ready to see anyone due to trauma and heart break.
I FINALLY met the love of my life last year.

Then finding out about all the extra scrutiny and higher bars we have to jump over... mentally accepting everything.

We finally decide when to make an official proposal in France before filing the paperwork.

Then we found out of all the hoops, scrutiny, and wait times... fine.

Then my travel plans got canceled... fine

Then the virus happened, can't collect necessary documents, we will have to wait till quarantine restrictions are lifted in our countries... fine
Now this? I mean COME ON, can we get a freaking break?

I really hope this gets pushed back, I refuse to believe our country can let this man just be... flat out cruel.

I believe you are mistaken.

American citizens have an inalienable right to petition the government. That includes petitions for immigration benefits for relatives.

The US government is under no obligation whatsoever to grant immigration benefits [or any other petition] to anybody, whether they're related to a  US citizen or not.

And that legal principle you posted relates to local states overriding the federal government, it has nothing whatsoever to do with what the Federal government does under it's own authority. And all immigration law is federal.

Folks, this infernal immigration system is traumatic at the best of times.

Working oneself into a frenzy over something that hasn't happened yet is counterproductive.

Just like the current lockdowns, any policy enacted now won't last forever.

The country -- and the world -- is in chaos.  Even if you could enter, your country might not let you out.

The greatest economic boom in U.S. history was reversed in just a couple of months.

The President's goal (as a lifelong businessman) is reopening and recovery.

Hard though it is, be patient.

One boon might be that USCIS finally catches up on AOS & ROC petitions that have languished for months.

That is what I was thinking. It could inadvertently speed up ROC, naturalization or even AOS.

Oiii - woke up to the news and just read through the entire thread. I feel for the WH staff who's probably already debating to call out sick in the morning. I wouldn't want to clean up this mess lol...

Besides immigration being on hold already, there are some things that come to mind

- How many jobs would he put at stake with this? USCIS, DOS - would they be furloughed?

- What negative impact would this have on the economy? Work visas are mainly given to workers that are needed. Something in me doesn't believe that his gun fetishs currently out blocking ambulance entries in their fight for "freedom" will be able to fill the jobs that a halt on work visas would leave available.

- Does he know that work visas are non-immigrant visas?

- Is he fighting to OPEN the country, or to CLOSE it? I'm confused 🥴But yeah, LIBERATE [fill in your state, unless you live in NY, CA, or similar]

Also I am not going to use my energy on this constitutional discussion trying to explain.
I think  we all should wait for tomorrow   Executive order..

Thanks. I'm one of the banned people. My husband is in Houston and I'm in Toronto having just filed the I-130 application in January. From the NYT article, it sounds like they won't process my application at all now. If it's suspended for a few weeks, fine. If all of us foreign resident spouses who are in the application process for I-130s are going to be denied simply because of an executive order, where do we end up? I know we have to wait until the morning, but this is just...

I am exactly in the same boat!

My wife lives in Houston (Missouri city) and I live in downtown Toronto. We just received our NOA2 and are now filing for NVC processing but are waiting for finger printing services to reopen so I can get my police certificate.

I hope everything works out for us.

It's just cruel. We have a legal path to bring our loved ones here. We follow the path. We do everything they tell us to do, meet all the challenges, and then this guy thinks "hey, what will get me reelected?" and we're all put up like sacrificial lambs? This is not right, and it's NOT American.

"it's NOT American" ... Ohh but it is! This is EXACTLY American. Don't you see he consistently gets 40%-45% of Americans behind him (regardless of what he does -- no matter how vile)? Wana guess how many Americans that percentage support translates to?
