This seems absolutely insane.  Shutting down all legal immigration?

I just got all of my docs submitted for the NVC phase of this.  This has been such a difficult journey and now this?

What, is the USCIS and NVC just going to stop working all together?  I mean, if no immigration is allowed, what would these agencies even do?

As much as I hate trump, I'd agree with freezing h1b visas and green card lottery for a while. I mean.. 22 millions unemployed people and numbers will go up.

Marriage/family visas, I guess it depends.. lots of people in certain industries are probably going to be out of work for several months. I guess they will need current employment proofs. If there isn't a source of income, we can all agree that it isn't the case to bring over new jobless people and get married, right?!

I think we all need to take a deep breath and wait. Who knows what this means. It may just be no forgeiners allowed into the country who are not already here... does not necessarily mean applications will not be processed... necessarily at least based one one late night tweet

It’s so typical. Trump makes a sweeping statement and leaves us all wondering what on earth he meant because he makes things up as he goes. I would wait for the WH to have more details. Also, weird they would make a decision like this since I don’t think there is any Senate-confirmed leadership at DHS right now andthere hasn’t been for months...

I don't know much about Politico, but I Googled "Immigration Suspended" and this article was first on the list.  Drilling down they seem to proffer that the suspension may apply to work related visas as there already been plenty of immigration restrictions put in place.  Just the messenger, so don't whack me too hard 😉.

Suspending Immigration: opinion

"Since the pandemic began, the administration had already restricted foreign visitors from China, Europe, Canada and Mexico, and had paused processing for immigrants trying to come into the U.S. on non-worker visas because of office closures. That means the impact would probably address only immigrants coming here to work."

Its not "they" its "he" and hes using the current pandemic as justification to implement it by emergency "executive order" (basically, do what i say)

Whether its legal and he can actually do this is open to debate, we`ll find out over the next few days.

One thing to keep in mind-Trump often makes grand statements which he later clarifies and limits. This may affect only new work visas etc. It will almost certainly not be the complete ban it sounds like now.

Hoping this is the gold medal comment for the thread!

I hear you. You'll have to make those decisions for yourself, maybe living in NZ is the right choice for now. It's not like the US is going to disappear and you can try again under a kinder administration.

If truly LPRs can be barred from getting/renewing their green cards/applying for citizenship, I'm effectively forced out of the country. Finland is great, not a bad place to go, but would be a shame to get booted at the final hurdle.

But let us not panic until we know more.

Re: your employment challenges, that really sucks. I've been there too.

I doubt renewals of GCs could be suspended (unless LPR statuses get revoked which is even more unlikely). But administrative technical issues may occur if USCIS cannot operate normally, which could affect naturalization processing as well as GC renewals (but not the LPR status).

Does anyone know if Trump is by law required to specify the time limitation beyond which the executive order will expire? That would definitely help with the anxiety here... Uncertainty is cruel to us.

There's a 99% chance this would only apply to H1B, H2B, OPT and other working visas and zero information except Trump's tweet, but here we have 13 pages of speculation already...

$100 bet for $10k payout that it only impacts working visas? I'd love to take that bet. Get it on PredictIt and I'm in.
