The Daily Mail has published photos from inside the Wuhan Institute of Virology which show a broken seal on one of the refrigerators used to store 1,500 virus strains including the bat coronavirus. The Mail reports that one of the comments on Twitter read: “I have seen better seals on my refrigerator in my kitchen.”

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

the seal on the refrigerator isn't that big of a deal, really.  what i'd be interested in knowing is if that fridge is in the level 4 lab or outside of it.
(also note that the guy is not in full level 4 gear, so my guess is not in the hot zone)

  It looks like a freezer and they are using BSL-2 protocols in that area. We have a lot of freezers that look like that. You are right, the seal isn't doing anything to stop the virus, it's keeping the freezer door shut properly so it stays in temp. BSL-2 is high enough for things like HIV or hepatitis. The other SARS- coronviruses require BSL-3 at least. Most infectious respiratory diseases need at least level 3. 

 

  That might just be the picture though. It's hard to tell how the area around is set up. I have seen other images from the Wuhan virology labs that does show higher BSL areas (posted one below). If there was a containment incident, I would suspect it's more likely that someone wasn't following proper protocols rather than the protocols not existing.

And I wonder whether that someone is still with us, or if he/she has been made to disappear...
