Is asset documentation an absolute requirement for I-944 or not?

Very frustrating experience with this new form...

The new form I-944 is requiring documentation of income as well as history of using public benefits, on top of credit reports/scores, degrees, debt, even proof of fluency in languages native to countries of origin, etc...

The I-944 instructions say that assets can be used in lieu of income if the minimum isn't met...but it's ambiguous whether assets are required to be documented independent of income. It also doesn't say that asset documents are optional either.

So what in the h e double hockey sticks do they want?! Does anyone have any experience or clue as to whether asset documents are absolutely required?

Thanks...

To me, In lieu of, would mean I am only documenting if I need them to evaluate.  If my income is sufficient,  my assets are nil.

YMMV

I agree with the above. You only need to list assets that you want to claim in support of your ability to be self-sufficient.

  • 9 months later...

Hi all! I bumped into this thread and if anyone can help me that would be wonderful.

1)Is my household income me and my husband's combined income OR just my husband's? If so, should I provide an estimate of such or the exact figure reported on the latest tax form?

2) Do I have to list ALL my assets if we meet the income requirements? I am imagining of how much paperwork that would be and I am getting a headache... but also the form I-944 doesn't really make it sound optional.

Any help is appreciared!
