I believe it may vary depending on the state you're moving to. In Texas it's good for a year. NC DMV Website

Check out that website. Should have information on that for you - or at least who to contact to ask about it.

It does vary by state. In Tennessee, you're supposed to apply for a driver's license within 30 days of your arrival. We'll probably be cutting it fine in order to get him a social security number first (which they require to get the license). My friend is a lawyer & she said the worst that would happen is he'd get a citation and have to pay a fine.

Hey that's not too bad! Dan already got a speeding ticket while he was here. At least it can't go on his driving record since he doesn't have one yet. It REALLY confused the state trooper that pulled us over that he had his UK license. He kept telling him "but where's your Texas license?" to which Dan kept responding "I don't LIVE here yet." It was all quite humorous; they ended up taking my license as well. Officer was nice about it all, though. Gave us a smaller fine than what he could have - put that he was going slower than we really were AND didn't add the construction zone part or anything concerning my DL address being wrong! $155 later - he's got his first American speeding ticket under his belt.

Here is Massachusetts a UK license is valid for 12 months or until you become resident, whichever comes first.... I applied for my license once I had got me EAD and SSN... I had to take both the written test and the road test but passed no problems...

Tim still finds it odd that he even needs to carry his license with him here. I find it even more strange that he *wouldn't* have to carry one with him over there. He only just got the kind with a photo on it. I don't think either of us looks particularly under-21, but he was even refused service in a bar once for not having an ID with him.

He had a similar conversation with a perplexed state trooper when he was in the US. It went like 5 rounds.

As everyone has said, check with your state. I didn't even have to get in reverse gear for my test and it was about 5mins long. They may as well have held it around a flipping car park. Judging by the way people drive around here, I'm not surprised the test was piss easy.

I went to Virginia for a year on a J-1 Visa. I had no problem using my UK drivers licence if I rented a car but when I bought a car I ran into trouble getting insurance. The insuracne companies told me I needed an international Driving Licence or a state licence...I of course didn't bother to get an international licence so I had to go get a state one. I went to the DMV and they just switched me right over...although the licence they gave me was only valid until the day my J-1 visa expired. When I go back on the IR1 visa I think I have to take the test...but before you go over just get yourself an international drivers licence here in the UK...I think you get the form at the post office...as most insurance companies will not insure you without it. I went with Geico in the end. They were really cheap and offered good service.

Good luck!

I'm on my way to Charlotte NC in early August on my newly received IR1 Visa (yeahhhh!)...

Can anyone advise me on what I need to do wrt my Drivers License...

Thanks,

Barry

In VA you now need a SS number in order to take the driving test. I was amazed at the two part test (especially since a girl I sat next to in the waiting room informed me that as I hadn't studied for the multiple choice questions part of the test, there is no way I would pass. I was terrified thinking it would be really hard. OK so the first question is : "spell your name correctly". Seriously - and when I got that one right, I got a point !!! yeah !!

The remainder of the questions were a little harder - like this gem: What should you do at a red light? (a) stop (B) increase your speed © honk your horn and shout loudly (d) indicate to turn left .......... I am very surprised I passed......

The actual driving test was a drive around the large car park with a left turn to turn into the parking space (took 3 mins in total).
