Hello everyone,

I was wondering if anyone knows if my parents would be eligible for a stimulus checks. They are considered a resident aliens for tax purposes (under presence test). They filled their 2018 and 2019 using ITIN number. On April 2020 they received their Green Cards and Social Security numbers and I sent letter to IRS to combine ITIN and SSN records so they can use their Social Security number when filling tax returns.

Since they received SSN and became green card holders just now, and filled using ITIN. Will they be eligible for stimulus check?

Thanks!

I will say they won’t get the stimulus as in the IRS record, they used ITIN for their tax return. Will your email to IRS make them replace the ITIN with SSN for the latest tax return already filed? Not sure and evennif they do how long will it take.

I am aware that people with social security number only are allowed. Please note that IRS can combine ITIN with SSN and all records including tax returns will be under SSN number. They met presence test for residency. It is not Earned Income Tax Credit that cannot be received if someone didn't have SSN at the end of tax year. IRS does not specifically mention if SSN has to be issued before end of 2019 or can be issued after.

Does anyone know if tax credits will be issued for 2020?

What people are receiving is a tax credit for 2020 tax return.

The advanced payment of this credit is what's based on 19/18 return. If you didn't qualify with 18/19, and qualify with 2020 return, you will receive the tax credit.
