I called healthcare.gov and the woman said I might need a SSN, which I cannot get until I have an EAD. Also I cannot prove my immigration status because USPS lost my NOA1.

You do not need to have an SSN in order to get health insurance.

Yes, I adjusted status from VWP. Do you know of any insurance companies that don't require a SSN?

Waiting to be able to work and travel is one of the primary drawbacks to adjusting as a tourist.

His health insurance (BCBS-IL) needs a SSN for spouses to be added

Not required.  I added my spouse to my employer based plan before he had an SSN.  When he got the SSN, we updated it.

No this is an adjustment of status by marrying an US Citizen. I don't get my SSN until the EAD is processed

When did you marry? I got my SSN two weeks after arriving in the US on my K1, married my fiancé a month later. How long have you been in the United States?

Added Ryan without a SS number. Updated it later.
Massive increase in my payments of course.
But, I did sign that I’m responsible for my husband and would have added him regardless.
I asked HR before he arrived. I did get push back and jumped some hoops.
I was told the exact same thing.
Eventually had a ss placeholder short term.
You can definitely ask for an expedite.
But be persistent that a ss number is not required, they will add you.
Good luck.

You can get healthcare through the Affordable Care Act exchange. You don't need a job for that. In fact, many jobs don't even offer it. I don't even get my own healthcare through a job and I am a USC. You also do not legally need a SSN to acquire health insurance. You also do not need an EAD to get a SSN. My husband had his SSN within the month of us getting married but waited about 5 months for an EAD

OP came on the VWP. Unless they had an SSN from a prior visa, they do need an EAD or green card to get one.

Your case was K-1, which does allow an SSN via status.

You need to call and ask for a supervisor. I have BC and BS and was able to add my wife before she had a SSN.

Finally done...

I just helped a relative apply for insurance on the marketplace.  I can confirm that the SS# is NOT REQUIRED.  The application went through, cards have arrived in the mail.

The people on the phone are not always correct.  They said that my relative would not get a subsidy, but they ended up getting a significant one.

If you have your NOA1, you can use that as proof of immigration status when applying.

I can confirm.  I added my spouse to my BCBC insurance without a SS# and had no issues.

SSNs are required to be provided if the applicant has a SSN.  If you don't have a SSN, you are still entitled to health insurance, by law.  Keep asking for supervisors.

My wife has affordable care act insurance, still waiting on SSN and EAD.
