Hello all,

I plan to marry my fiance in the Dominican Republic where he lives. We will receive the marriage license at the courthouse over in his country. However, in order to apply for the CR1 visa in the States, will we have t get the marriage license translated to apply for his visa? Or is the Spanish license sufficient? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

His visa will not be applied for in the US.  It is the "Marriage Certificate" that needs to be translated in order for the US Citizen to file an I-130 petition in his behalf.  Once the petition is approved, the foreign spouse "applies for" the visa in their home country or country of legal residence.

A marriage license is a license to marry.  A marriage certificate "certifies" an actual marriage took place and was "registered" with the proper government agency.  Sometimes the license and the certificate appear on the same page, but they are separate entities with separate purposes.
