health insurance

I am looking for short term health insurance options for my husband who just recently got his green card.

I can add him to my insurance, but his benefits won't be active for 90 days. I needed his social security number to add him, and I only had the option to add him within 60 days of our marriage. He didn't get his social security number until recently. And they're now saying yes I can add him, but he won't be covered for 3 months.

So basically we need some sort of insurance for him until his benefits are active on mine or he finds a job.

Any help appreciated. Thanks

Well they lied to you saying he needed a SSN, could you use that as something to get him added now?

Is this something that is a thing in all states?

Can you give me a link to this info?

I’d rather have my resources before conflict. I am not a confrontational person... haha.

SSN is a Federal issue and is a Social Security Number, nothing to do with health insurance. Now seems quite common that at a junior level you are asked to provide a SSN as that is what they are used to and how their systems are designed, however they can put in a placeholder number. Many people have found that they need to kick it up the chain until they find someone who knows what they are doing.

Apart from anything else it makes no sense, there are plenty of people in the US that are here legally and long term and are not entitled to a SSN but still end health insurance. Simialr to asking for a SSN to obtain Auto Insurance.

Okay thank you.

I am a teacher in California so it’ll be a long chain to crawl to get answers... I will look into it.

Very upsetting if this was the case. He could’ve been added months ago.

Thank you for your reply!

Even less excusable, they definitely should know better.

I’ve emailed the people in charge of health insurance for teachers in the state. I’ll also call them Monday.

thank you again. I never would’ve known.

I'm also on CALPERS health insurance, I added my husband to mine while he was still living in Brazil, all I did was send HR our marriage certificate with English translation a week after I came back from our wedding in Brazil, they added him with his full name and date of birth, no SSN was needed.
