Hi All,

Hoping to find someone who's been through this and can help where to start :) My husband has a bachelors in chemical analysis from his home country and we are trying to find out what needs to be done for him to work as a Clinical Lab Technician here in the US, once he arrives.

So far we were able to find out that certain states require certification, and many states don't (such as the state I live in, NJ). However, we seem to not use the right terms in google to find any information on what needs to be done before he can apply for a job. Thinking equivalency exams (like we saw for pharmacy), or any other tests to confirm that his degree can be used.

Anyone here with insight?

The requirements for your state should be pretty clearly described on the state department of health website.  I would be extremely surprised if the state of New Jersey has no certification, licensure, or vetting process for that role.

Thanks! State requirements are clear, but I was looking for national equivalency exams and couldn't seem to find the right resource.

The ASCP test is one way of getting certified, I also know of AMT but from my research ascp is best. Then the rest depends on your state :)

This is great, thank you! Have you gone through the process? Looks like it starts with an evaluation of the foreign transcript by an authorized evaluation agency, and from there the regular certification offered to US degree holders.

Yes that’s how it is from what I understand. I haven’t done it yet, my school was closed and I’m not sure about how to get my transcripts, but I plan to do it once I can! Good luck!! :)
