Hi Visa Journey!!

I hope everyone and their family's are remaining safe during these uncertain times we are currently facing. I have a few questions about the stimulus checks. I read on a website that if I haven't filed my 2018/2019 taxes I can request a Social Security statement  and submit that to the IRS to qualify for the stimulus package. Is this true? I just wanted confirmation before I actually do so. My wife and I meant to file earlier  but I've had an issue with retrieving certain W2's from the 2018 tax year and now it's looking even more impossible with whats going on to get that information. I just want to  secure this situation for us first and then we'll look into filing at a later date when things cool down. Also if I do submit the tax statement where do I submit it to? Answers would greatly appreciated! Thanks and  stay safe!

This is the official Stimulus check information.  There are specific instructions for non-filers.:  https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus/economic-impact-payments

Were you not required to file for 2018, or are you just late in doing so?  Because if the latter, I don't think the non-filer info applies.

Hi, I was late in filing. I made over $12,200 which is over the amount to qualify as "non-filer". I'm confused at this point.

Right, so the info in that link doesn't apply in your situation.

I would think you would need to be up to date on filing/taxes owed in order to receive the stimulus check.

So I thought  as well but I'm unable to retrieve one of my W2's from a job I had back in 2018.My original was to file 2018/19 when I had all of them together. II  did some research on what  I could submit seeing how I haven't done my taxes and I stumbled upon this:

https://www.nytimes.com/article/coronavirus-stimulus-package-questions-answers.html

If this holds truth where would one file these documents?

What year’s income should I be looking at?

"2019. If you haven’t prepared a tax return yet, you can use your 2018 return. If you haven’t filed that yet, you can use a 2019 Social Security statement showing your income to see what an employer reported to the I.R.S."

I agree with Joregdig here. From my understanding you need to either qualify as a non filer and use the non filers payment info portal (which you dont) OR file your taxes and include bank information on them (or wait until Apr 17th for them to open a portal where you can enter your bank info if it wasnt on your return).

I believe the FAQ you read in the times article is pretty much saying you want to look at your 2019 numbers to see if you qualify for the stimulus. If you dont have 2019 taxes done you can look at your 2018 taxes. If you havent filed 2018 then you will want to look at your 2019 SS statement to see how much income was reported under your name. Then you will know if you qualify and if you are under the filing threshold you could use the non filers portal, if you are over the threshold you have to file your taxes! The SS statements are not an alternate way of claiming the stimulus- just an alt way for you to determine if you qualify to use the non filing portal or if/when you file if you would get any stimulus money.

The only way for you to receive a stimulus payment is file a tax return. (Exception is those who did not earn enough to file a return, and that’s not you). There is nothing you can mail in now to get an advance payment except filing an actual tax return. If you miss the window to get the early payment, then you will have to wait until you file your 2020 tax year return which will have a line for the stimulus credit. Those who got the early advance $ won’t collect on the 2020 return because they got it early. Those who didn’t get it early will be able to qualify on their 2020 return.

About your tax returns...The IRS has an answer for just about everything including failure to get a W2. They would have sent you a substitute one (for 2018 taxes) a year ago.
