Exit Taxes?

Hi,

I moved to the US in December of 2018 and I've been living here ever since. I filed my taxes for 2018 in March of last year because I was working part time and in school part time. In all of 2019, I did not work in the US (did not get my greencard until later in the year) and was in the US so I did not return to Canada. I am pretty sure I have to file taxes one last time in Canada last year, or am I wrong because I did not make any money? Is there anything else I would declare? I have no house, assets, etc as I was only 22 when I left. Sorry if my question is stupid lol.

Marie

If you didn't work in Canada, all of 2019 you do not need to file.

Thank you so much for the responses. I did not work at all in 2019 in either country so I will not file.

YOu do not need to notify anyone. But yes if they owe anything it needs to be settled.

You just contradicted yourself. The only scenario where you shouldnt contact the cra is if you are 100% sure you dont owe anything (or conversely are owed anything). For the time it takes to give the cra a phone call to confirm you might as well. Better to leave on good standing just in case you ever decide to move back.

But if people hate phone calls that's a list of what you may or may not need to do.

There was no contradiction. You said the same thing.

So you can settle accounts without notifying people? That is news to me. And no we didnt say the same thing. I'm encouraging a call to the cra to confirm since it is better to be safe than sorry.

You dont need to notify them. But you should settle accounts if you have them.   I happen to know I didnt have any and while I filed exit taxes because I worked, I wouldnt have needed to without working. So I woukdnt have needed to call the CRA. I happen to know I never owed taxes, all my debts were paid and only the minimum was left in an account to keep it open for my EI from Canada.

Each person should know what they do and do not owe and have open. If you dont then yes, calling is a very good idea.

That's correct everyone should know. My experience with people is that is not always the case. The OP asked if they should file a tax return. No they shouldnt but considering they were unsure of what they even needed to do its probably better to just call rather than assume that they aren't missing something.

The reality is the government of canada says on their website to notify them as soon as possible and that is probably the best course of action for most people.
