Hey all,

My husband moved to the US June 2019 on a K1 visa and we got married in August. He just got approval to work in March 2020. He had just started his own tree service business (he's an arborist) and then our governor shut down all non-essential business. He doesn't have a long work history but did have jobs lined up that he had to cancel. Do you know if he would be eligible for unemployment? He does have a ss# and we're in Michigan if that helps.

Thanks and hope everyone is hanging in there!

If he is self-employed, he can try to apply with local state but it is very difficult to get approved, especially he just started. He can try SBA's Emergency Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) for small business but it is completely backlogged now so good luck.

There's no immigration reason he won't qualify and it's not an issue for AOS or later.

But given his specific circumstances with regards to being elf employed and the very short timing of working, he may or may not be eligible. He is free to apply in accordance with state laws.
