Shades of trying to get an Infopass appointment back when they were scheduling those online.

Ordering groceries online has suddenly gone from bad to worse

Time slots are unavailable and, if you're fortunate enough to get one, delivery dates are a week or more out. Orders are late or abruptly canceled at the last hour.  And items are missing.

Some metro Detroit residents have turned to getting up in the middle of the night to order groceries online, with mixed results.

CORONAVIRUS WATCH: Stay informed on the latest COVID-19 updates, locally and nationally.  Sign up for our newsletteAfter Kristen MacKay of Birmingham heard that some people were having luck ordering groceries in the middle of the night, she got up at 4 a.m. earlier this week and hopped on the Kroger app to check for available times at two nearby stores.

It paid off and she was able to place an order at one of the stores. But the time available was a week away.

"It's a really great service," MacKay said. "I just don't like waiting a week, but it is what it is. I could glove up and mask up and go to the store herself, but that's not helping the current situation. "

I use Walmart because they are close. It's about 3 days in advance to setup pickup here, but once you reserve the slot, you can keep adding to your order until 1:00AM on the delivery day. I usually order the minimum amount 4 days ahead and then add everything we actually need the night before. Some Walmarts suck, but the one near us is decent as far as food quality goes.

You can also allow substitutions, which helps if they are out of stock on a specific brand. If you don't like what they substitute you can decline it. Usually it's something close/acceptable, but once in a while it's something weird. They always give you the lower price, so we have had items where we have ordered a small size, and got the large size substituted for the same price.

I don't mean this to sound like a plug for Walmart, because I generally avoid them, but they have come through so far with grocery pickup. I'm not easily impressed by retail schemes, and I'm very picky about produce, but I have been happy with the setup so far. I haven't been in a grocery store for almost 4 weeks now.

I have given up trying to do pickup here from my local Ralphs. The slots aren't available -- gossip on my local Nextdoor is that if you are up at 2am, you might get one. I'm looking at the slots right now and the next available one is on April 17th. We're pretty well stocked up but the half and half situation is dire and I could do with some fresh vegetables, particularly spinach and mushrooms, as well as some cheese. I need to run the car today anyway -- it's been parked since Sunday (I think?) so I might just grab my mask and make a quick visit.

The other supermarkets around here don't do pickup or delivery so it's Ralphs or nothing. And right now Ralphs IS nothing unless I wait a week.

The other one here is King Soopers and they schedule out as far as people want, so it was April 23rd I think for the one near me. Walmart won't go more than 4 days out, but you just have to get scheduled early. Other places say they would like to do pickup but they have  to train staff how to do that and it's the training they don't have time to do right now.

I've thought about trying Walmart delivery, but I realized that half the things I want are groceries, and half are other items not listed.  Went to Walmart today with the mask and gloves on.  Looked like half the people shopping had no protective gear on.  Got everything I wanted and got the heck out of there.  Was in Costco yesterday and noticed much the same.  1/3 wearing masks, 1/3 wearing gloves, and 1/3 without anything.

Tomorrow packing up the extended family and heading to the Keys.  Will be interesting.  There is a check point entering the Keys, and you must be a resident or home owner to enter.  Got my tax bill and a utility bill.  Trouble is we are going down in two cars, and their car has Mass plates.  I'm sure that will raise some eyebrows.

I have not had success yet with grocery delivery or pickup. They always had to cancel on me or call me to say they couldn't give me anything so we are still choosing carefully when to go out and try and find barely what we need. Still, even as stressed with orders as Walmart has been lately with stuff out of stock they have come through for me on materials I needed delivered, whereas another company had terrible customer service and then cancelled everything three weeks later. Sewing time!

Nobody delivers anywhere near me, nor the adjacent County, I did see someone advertising on Facebook who would do so but the cost would be impressive.

The Brewery will do kerb side delivery, call them and they will bring it out. I believe the Pot shops will do the same.

I just got back from Whole Foods. It took about 15 minutes to get in and then another 15 to check out. Everyone was wearing masks and most were also wearing gloves. This was the first I was out since Monday (I think?).

Saving my shopping trip, maybe tomorrow? Was Whole Foods well stocked?

Well, fresh produce, fish and meat were fully stocked. No problem getting anything. There was a German woman flipping out because she was worried they wouldn't have enough rack of lamb for Easter but they did. Booze -- fully loaded! Pasta stocks were low but there was some on the shelves. No toilet tissue or paper towels, no flour. Plenty of dairy including the cheeses I came for. Same for the seltzer. It was sort of less shocking than a couple of weeks ago. Some stuff is never there, but there is definitely more.

I read they are putting restrictions on booze sales in Chicago, so good to get stocked up.

I got two bottles of white and some canned rose sparkling wine because it was on sale. Don't judge me.

What about tomorrow?

My wife use to do click list at Kroger. As Steel was saying, one problem is they have so many items out of stock the subs get crazy.

She is an asst manager for drug gm now. Kroger is giving them as many hours as they want and gave them 2 bucks an hour taise.

Really impressed how Kroger takes care of their people.

I have been sitting home now for a week. I got a nice surprise today. We get paid on the 10th of every month. I was not expecting a check, but our company paid everyone thier avg monthly commission. Yearly salary divided by 12. They also advance us 1500 every month to cover insurance etc. They forgave that
