If you die at home from the coronavirus, there’s a good chance you won’t be included in the official death toll, because of a discrepancy in New York City’s reporting process. Update: After WNYC/Gothamist's reporting, the city has reversed its position and will count probable COVID-19 deaths that occur at home.

The problem means the city’s official death count is likely far lower than the real toll taken by the virus, according to public health officials.

It also means that victims without access to testing are not being counted, and even epidemiologists are left without a full understanding of the pandemic.

As of Monday afternoon, 2,738 New York City residents have died from ‘confirmed’ cases of COVID-19, according to the city Department of Health. That’s an average of 245 a day since the previous Monday.

But another 200 city residents are now dying at home each day, compared to 20 to 25 such deaths before the pandemic, said Aja Worthy-Davis, a spokeswoman for the medical examiner’s office. And an untold number of them are unconfirmed.

Welcome to death toll maffs.  That's why H1N1 deaths are listed as 150k~550k.  It's no more than a guess.  Made by "experts".

I'm not sure why experts is in quotes here.

You're admitting that the numbers are an estimation, because they're hard to count correctly because of a myriad of reasons.

The CDC also says, on their website, that that number is an estimation, so it's not like they're hiding that.

I've never gotten the Trumposphere's disdain for experts. A lot of these people have devoted their lives to a single subject, why is it so hard to believe them to the point of mocking them when they clearly know what they're talking about in favor of a gut feeling or conspiracy theories.

It's not just experts, it's knowledge and education in general. Apparently it's "elitist" to care about actual expertise and to value education. They say universities have a liberal bias, well, could it be that the more intelligent, educated and exposed to new ideas and knowledge you are, the less likely it is to hold conservative views and the more likely it is to be open minded? But apparently that's elitist. Trump can't even speak properly and he speaks at a fourth grade level and they love that. They like strongmen with simple, one line solutions to complex problems.

Universities today are very far from promoting free speech and new ideas.

Thank you for illustrating my point perfectly. I wasn't talking about free speech, I was talking about the anti intellectualiasm prevalent among Trumpers. I'm not sure what free speech has to do with it. Also, protesting and interrupting is also part of free speech but again, free speech is not really relevant here.

oh right, that anti intellectualism that you see but can't point out.  perhaps in the meantime you can expand on how "protesting and interrupting" allows "new ideas" to be discussed.

I did point it out and the person I quoted was talking about it. I don't know where you saw "new ideas" being discussed in my post. The disdain for expertise, science and education in a significant part of the population is a real problem. Some idiots being protested at college campuses when they give idiotic speeches is not.

Albert Einstein was an awkward kid at best, and didn't place much value on education. He couldn't speak well at all.  His grades were bad.  But by the age of 15, he was better at differentiation and integration than I was at the age of 25.  When he failed to get his doctoral dissertation accepted, he instead decide to write some "papers" that changed the field of science forever.

All of the above to say that genius can come from within, and not as a product of the education system.  And quite often, the simplest solutions are the best ones.

As to the bold part, not sure where you came up with that hypothesis, but conservative views and open-mindedness are NOT mutually exclusive.  Just as being a liberal does not make one any smarter than another.
