Help! USC filing with non permanent resident

Hello everyone! Really need some help!

 

I’m married to a USC and he’s about to file taxes. I don’t have a SSN or valid ITIN number (have an old expired one).

 

He uses Turbotax and it’s asking him for my SSN. How do we do it? Is there any way to select that I’m not a permanent resident?

To file jointly, you must have an SSN or ITIN. If you want to do that roue, you'll need to get an ITIN, which means completing a W-7 and such (it's a few steps you have to take).

To file separately, he can write in "NRA". He won't be able to e-File. He can still use TurboTax Online I believe (and definitely can if using the desktop software), but he will need to print the form, write-in "NRA" and paper file.

He'll have to paper file. If he's selecting to file married filing separately then he can out NRA into the field where it asks for your SSN. If he chooses married filing jointly, you need to apply for an ITIN renewal.

I do. Although the last time I paper filed, I did it via H&R Block Free File online, printed the resulting PDF, then filled in the remaining information, attached my W-2, etc. It's not hard, but like anythig you need to read the instructions carefully.

 

How hard/easy or complex/simple it is depends on your circumstances. For most regular wage earners w/ just W-2s and not itemizing, it's usually pretty simple. For others, it can take hours, days, or weeks.

My papers are still sitting here so I don't know. I believe no prior experience really applies in the current climate

ITIN renewal takes approx. 7 weeks based on the info sheet on their website, so you would have to account for that if you choose the MFJ route.

Given the current circumstances, any sort of timeframe I give would be speculation, sorry.

When I last paper filed (3 years ago), I had a refund coming an it took about 4-6 weeks to get the refund deposited in my account. So it was a few weeks slower than e-Filing, but not excessive.
