It's OK, it's my thread!

Here in SoCal it's raining.

Just heard thunder here... absolutely tipping down now. I have been engaged in a standoff about the thermostat all day. I want it 68, he says put on a sweater. I HAVE A SWEATER ON! He says put on another sweater and some socks. I have a perfectly good pair of shearling slippers thank you, and my feet are warm. It is the rest of me that is not. When I protested again he said he could think of another way to heat me up that didn't involve spending any money and I told him he didn't need to be crude. Then he said to take my mind out of the gutter, he was only going to suggest a cup of tea.

Florida is indeed beautiful, minus the heat and humidity.  I'm not too far from you, near FLL.  Alaska had lots more to offer for us that prefer outdoor life.  Wouldn't want to retire there, but I sure did enjoy living there when I did.  One thing I don't like about Florida is the geography... you can stand in Ernest Hemingway's home in Key West and see all the way to Tallahassee! (Well, not really, but you know what I mean.

I do hate that they closed the beaches down here.  That's a bummer, as we really enjoy the sun and ocean air.  Might drive over today or tomorrow and see just how serious they are about the closure.  Should be pretty safe, since no one is (allegedly) out there, except on boats.

If you like Florida so much, I highly suggest a trip to the Dominican Republic when planes are flying again.  Puerto Plata in particular.  Very beautiful, and the people are super nice.

Not exactly the same but pretty close by...I'm actually planning a move to Puerto Rico next year. Need to get out of this cold state.

I mean, if you compare Vegas to some sleepy small town, it sure is more exciting. I just compare it with other cities in the US and around the world where I've been and where I've lived, so it's just meh. I was excited to relive some college fun years in Vegas, it certainly didn't live up to my expectations.

Therein lies the problem.

Also, in addition to all the problems mentioned, let's not forget that the South has really been high rates of obesity, which is not going to help at all.

The sad thing is, as the point about migration in urban centers points out, rural areas are going to be, and have already in some cases, become overwhelmed with the patient load. It will be hundreds of NYC scenarios playing out on a smaller scale. It won't make the headlines, but in per capita terns, devastating.

Last I heard from reading this forum, the virus is just a NYC problem and we can't shut the whole country down for them.

It's sad to see how culturally divided this nation has become. Can you imagine a response to 9 11 that tells New Yorkers "well you made your bed with those tall buildings, you are on your own"?

So here we are, two weeks later.  Let's examine the numbers by region:

Region          Deaths.    # of States

Northeast     26,833           9

MidWest          5,478         12

South               4,872         17

West                 2,806        13

Looks like the South is doing fairly well overall, unless I am missing a component of the predictions set forth previously?

Pretty sure I read recently that peaks in the South aren't set to hit until later in the spring. Tennessee in June IIRC. So of course you aren't seeing the cases/deaths yet. It's hitting different parts of the country at different times. I thought we all understood that?

Honestly, if those figures are right, I'd be concerned now anyway. The virus has been out here in the West longer than in the South and yet we have fewer deaths so 🤷‍♀️

Why does the West have fewer deaths?
